Referrals in International Offices

Question

Hi all,

I’m currently applying for roles in the European and Middle Eastern offices of firms like Arthur D. Little, Strategy&, and BCG. I’m curious about how much weight referrals carry in these regions compared to the US. Are they equally impactful, or do firms in Europe and the Middle East place less emphasis on them?

Additionally, I’m weighing the trade-off between applying without a referral (if securing one takes too long) versus waiting to find one before submitting my application. I’d love to hear your insights on whether it’s worth holding off or if a strong application alone can suffice.

Referrals in Europe and the Middle East carry less weight than in the US but are still very valuable. While firms in these regions often place more emphasis on a strong CV, cover letter, and relevant experience, a referral can help your application stand out in a competitive pool and make sure that your CV is looked at! If securing a referral takes too long, it’s better to apply early, as many firms review applications on a rolling basis. However, if you later secure a referral, ask your contact to inform HR to retroactively boost your chances.

Hey,

Can't tell you exactly in which geography referrals carry more weight, though one thing I know for sure: you should NEVER apply without a referral.

Ideally, the referral should be from a senior employee (project leader and above). In order to get one, network extensively through LinkedIn and your personal network.

P.S. Although referrals are very important, even getting one does not guarantee an interview invite nowadays. Also make sure you have a stellar CV and a LinkedIn profile at the ready.

Referrals can definitely help in Europe and the Middle East, but from my experience at MBB and conversations with candidates, firms in these regions place a stronger emphasis on a solid application and strong interview performance. A referral can help get your application noticed, but it won’t replace a strong profile.

If securing a referral takes too long, it’s usually better to submit a well-prepared application first and keep networking in parallel. That way, if your application is under review, a referral can still be added later to support your candidacy.

They carry the same weight overall.

However, if you are coming from the outside, they are much more important (e.g., if you apply for a country in the Middle East where you have no ties to).

Hey there,

Simply put:

Referrals carry equal weighting across regions whether in US and or Middle East and or Europe
Your chances of being successful are better WITH a referral vs without one
The more senior your referral - the better impact that will have on your application
HOWEVER, having a referral does not replace the importance of having a strong profile and CV. A referral doesn't guarantee you will pass screening!
So please focus on having a strong application in combination with a strong referral to maximise your chances!
