McKinsey Insight Program Selection Process

Hi all,

I’m interested in applying to the McKinsey Insight Program and was hoping to get some clarification on the selection process. I understand the initial application consists of a resume screen, but I’m unsure about the additional evaluation steps.

Does McKinsey require candidates to complete the Solve assessment or participate in interviews with recruiters before being accepted into Insight? If so, what does that process typically look like? The website is pretty vague and makes it seem like you drop a resume and then they inform you if you've been selected. Seems fairly simple for such a competitive process.

Additionally, does not being selected for Insight impact full-time recruiting later in the summer, or is it independent of the full-time application process?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

The process for the Insight program is similar than the standard Mckinsey interview process. This involves the Problem Solving game followed by interview rounds consisting of case interview and fit interview.

If you are not selected for Insight, you can still apply for the full time role. Note you need to show you 've worked on your improvement areas.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi there,

AFAIK its mainly resume and Solve-based. If interviews are part of it, they are simplified and shorter.

All the best,

Hello there!

Does McKinsey require candidates to complete the Solve assessment or participate in interviews with recruiters before being accepted into Insight? If so, what does that process typically look like?

No, at least in 2024 the process was: CV screening (limited spots, so one has to nail it) followed by a phone interview consisting in motivation/behavioral questions and a short-case interview for which the bar is way lower than normally, since the program is for people with limited experience in consulting/consulting prep.

For the behavioral part, look for McKinsey PEI dimensions and also consider the trivial questions: why McKinsey? Why consulting?
For the case interview, you should know at least how to structure a problem and how to properly tackle a math question.

I suggest you to reach out to past participants to discuss their experience with the phone interview - you can find some of them in McKinsey Insights page and look for them in LinkedIn.

Best,

Mari

Hey there 😊,

After doing some research, here’s what I found about the McKinsey Insight Program selection process:

1️⃣ Selection Process

  • Resume Submission: The first step is a resume screen, where McKinsey assesses your academic background, leadership experience, and problem-solving skills.
  • Additional Assessments: While the website suggests a simple resume drop, some candidates may be asked to complete additional steps, including:
    • McKinsey Solve Assessment: Some applicants report being invited to take the Solve game, but this isn’t always required.
    • Brief Interviews: In some cases, McKinsey may conduct a short interview to evaluate your motivation and fit.

2️⃣ Does Not Getting In Hurt Full-Time Recruiting?

  • No, it does not. The Insight Program is independent of full-time recruiting, so not being selected won’t impact your MBB applications later.
  • If you don’t get into Insight, you can still apply for full-time or internship roles in the summer without any penalty.

3️⃣ How to Improve Your Chances?

Strong Resume: Highlight leadership, analytical skills, and problem-solving experiences—they look for candidates with consulting potential.
Stay Ready for Possible Assessments: If invited to Solve or an interview, treat it as a light version of full-time recruiting.

The process may vary slightly by region and year, so it’s best to apply early and stay prepared in case additional steps are required. Let me know if you need any help positioning your application!

Best, Alessa 😇
