ATS

Hi, do consulting firms use ATS for selecting the resumes? And how to pass through the ATS? Many times I apply, but receive that frustrating message that "...... We regret to....."

Hi Mohamed,

The CV screening is a mix between ATS and human check.

Feel free to contact me via chat so I can optimize your CV and avoid rejection.

Hi Mohamed,

Yes, most consulting firms do use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems), but the impact varies by firm.

MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain)

They use ATS mainly for application tracking and basic filtering (e.g., education, work eligibility), but your resume is still reviewed by a recruiter. ATS plays a minor role in selection.

Tier 2 & Big 4 Firms

Firms like Strategy&, Oliver Wyman, and the Big 4 rely more heavily on ATS — especially for high-volume roles. These systems may filter out resumes that don’t match specific keywords or formats.

Why You’re Getting Rejections

It’s often less about the ATS and more about:
    •    Generic or unfocused resumes
    •    Lack of relevant keywords
    •    No referral or networking
    •    Roles being filled internally or at the wrong time

How to Beat the ATS (and Impress Recruiters)
    •    Use a clean, one-page format (no tables, graphics, or text boxes)
    •    Incorporate keywords from the job description (e.g., “strategy,” “market analysis,” “operational improvement”)
    •    Show impact with metrics (e.g., “Led cost-saving initiative saving $500K/year”)
    •    Tailor each application to the firm and role

Networking and referrals still matter a lot — ATS is just one piece of the puzzle.

Feel free to message me if you want help tailoring your CV or making sure it passes the ATS properly!

Best,

Evelina

They use ATS for tracking. Usually not for resume selection.

If you have a well crafted resume (and an experience /achievements that are in line with what they are looking for) you should have a good chance of getting the interview. It is not the ATS or the lack of keywords that prevent you from getting the interview.

Reach out for a CV review so we can make a realistic assessment and define together what can be done in order to maximize your chances.

Hi Mohamed!

It’s a mix of content and format that prevents ATS to select your resume. Feel free to send it to me and I’ll do a free evaluation to check if that is the case.

Best,

Mari

Mohamed,

It depends on the region and the firm (sorry, but that's the reality of it).

ATS aside, it's imperative to develop a great CV. There are lots of materials here on the platform about it and several coaches, including myself, offer review services. Honestly, especially at the early stages of your application journey, there's no better ROI than getting a professional CV review. It makes a huge difference.

Hi Mohamed!

Honestly there is a mix between ATS and the recruiting team.

What I recommend you do is work on your CV and coverletters (if they apply). If you come from a non-traditional background e.g. doctor, architect etc. the manner in which your write your CV is even more so important.

Happy to chat and good luck!

There are a few baseline things that ATS or even humans will check for - can you confirm the following is true for you?

  1. Do you go to a target school? (This is very important if you are applying post college and not as an experienced hire)
  2. Do you have a good GPA?
  3. Do you need a visa sponsorship for the office you are applying to?
  4. Do you have extra curriculars that are meaningful?
  5. Do you have sufficient work experience or can you demonstrate that you have used your free time in the summer etc effectively/productively?
  6. Is your resume in the right format? (1 pg, easy to read, well aligned)
  7. Is your resume free of grammatical errors?

Make sure the above is true for you and it is likely that you will pass through the initial screening rounds

Thanks for your answers all. Really it was insightful and valuable. As I understood, CV passes through two stages: First: going through ATS to track it. At this level, specific keywords should be detected. This means I have to choose that words carefully and tailor the CV accordingly. Second: Selecting, which is done by a human (recruiter). In this stage, CV should contain all the qualifications (listed carefully and clearly) that can attract the recruiter. Am I correct?

Hi Mohamed,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from several applications!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, while almost all major consulting firms seem to use ATS, I believe that the reason you're getting rejections is not because of the systems they use, but because of your application files.
  • Moreover, I would therefore strongly advise you to consider working with an experienced coach like myself to have your application files properly reviewed to increase your chances of success.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
