Solve Assessment for McKinsey Before or After Recruiter Screening Call

Hi all,

I recently got an email from a recruiter to setup some time for a recruiter screening call from McKinsey for the business analyst role for McKinsey Digital. I was wondering if Solve is done before or after this screening. I had completed a Solve assessment in May of 2024 for a different role. I never explicitly got the results for my solve assessment. Will I be asked to redo the Solve assessment if I make it past recruiter screening?

On that note, any general advice for the recruiter screen round?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, and contrary to what other coaches have said, it depends on the country and your specific role whether you generally have to do the McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment before or after the recruiter call. Ultimately, though, I wonder if it really matters as long as you know you have to do both aspects of the application process. Why do you want to know the order?
  • Moreover, please keep in mind that McKinse Solve scores are typically valid for 12 months, so I do not think you will be able to redo it.
  • Lastly, it’s common for McKinsey and other consulting firms not to share detailed feedback or pre-interview assessment results due to standardized procedures, although there may be a few individual offices that do not follow global procedures.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi,

The McKinsey Solve Assessment, also known as the McKinsey Problem-Solving Game, is typically taken before the recruiter screening call. If you perform well on this assessment, you'll likely be invited for a subsequent interview, which could include a recruiter screening call and possibly a case interview.

Good luck with the assessment.

Hey there,

McKinsey has 2 screening processes. The first one obviously to determine those that meet the minimum requirements to do Solve, and another one before taking you for 1st round. This is the one where they would have screening calls, but in some instances (i.e. different regions and for different practices) they just do another round of screening without calling. typically does screening before Solve assessments.

McKinsey also use Solve results for 12 months (1 year) so your results from May 2024 are still valid now and McKinsey won't make you retake or re-do them until after the year.

Regarding general advice for recruiter screening round, think of this as a general interview on your experience and achievements. It won't be as intense as a normal interview with PEI. The recruiter would be looking to make sure you're a good fit for the Firm (both professionally and culturally). So make sure to know your CV in and out, as well as your motivations for joining the firm and all

All the best

Hi there,

Typically, the Solve assessment is completed before the recruiter screening, but it can vary by role and office. Since you completed the Solve assessment earlier, it’s likely that McKinsey will review your results, and you may not need to redo it unless they request it.

As for the recruiter screening, it’s usually a behavioral interview where they assess your fit for the role. Be prepared to discuss your background, why you're interested in McKinsey Digital, and your problem-solving skills. Focus on showcasing leadership, impact, and teamwork examples.

Good luck! Let me know if you need more tips!

Hey!

Solve assessments are typically completed before the recruiter screening call, but practices can vary by region or role. Since you already completed Solve in May 2024, McKinsey may or may not require you to retake it, depending on their internal policy and how long results are valid. You can ask the recruiter directly for clarification. For the recruiter screen, focus on clearly articulating your background, motivation for joining McKinsey Digital, and relevant experiences. Be concise and confident while highlighting skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and digital expertise.

I scored decile 10- 525 and was rejected 4 weeks after test in Dubai for Associate role recently.

I thought I had a good resume, B.Eng/ MBA a referral, but not from a target (but not a bad one -T25).

I think they must screen CVs after the test in this region- otherwise they would not have made candidates waste time preparing for the test.
