McKinsey Referral

Hi, I'm in an odd situation. Looking to apply to McKinsey BA Intern role. I've been reaching out to people and have three referral links now. I will obviously use only one link to apply, but am curious if the other two get logged against my profile, as referrals that were extended but I did not use? Don't want it to seem strange to recruiters.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, I would advise you not to worry. This will not be held against you.
  • Moreover, please keep in mind to inform the other referees that you appreciate their willingness to refer you but have decided to proceed with another referral.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Sounds great! Good job networking.

Don't worry about "not using" two of the referral links. I'd probably pick the most senior person or the person I think is most likely to vouch for me.

To make sure you get the max benefit from all the networking, I'd mention the other two people you got a referral from by name in your cover letter. That way you can almost get an informal referral in the case the recruiter asks them! A win:win.

Good luck!

Martha

Fully agree with Martha's answer that's the best way forward. You can also ask the other referrals if they're willing to help you prepare for an interview if you get a first round invite.

Hi there,

No worries - it will not be held against you. :D

The only thing I would do is contact the other 2 people directly and tell them that you have used a different link.

Cheers, and all the best,

Florian

Just got rejected by McKinsey after final round of interview. I really want to fix the mistakes and re-apply. Any recommendations on way forward?
