Just got rejected by McKinsey after final round of interview. I really want to fix the mistakes and re-apply. Any recommendations on way forward?

Hey there!

First of all, getting to the final stage is already a great feat :-)

From my experience, partner interviews will mostly focus on 1-2 areas that the first-round interviewers were not fully convinced of. So for example, if a candidate did not adequately answer the quant question, the partner would select a quant-heavy case study to test or validate the candidate's skill level.

I recommend you to do two things:

  • Reflect on the questions the partner has asked you to understand where you need to improve for the next application. Generally, you can apply after 1-1.5 years again, especially if something material has changed in your resume (e.g., you completed another degree, you collected valuable consulting experience, etc.)
  • Actively ask for feedback from your contact person in the recruiting team. They are present in the discussions and can give you some hints also.

Please feel free to DM me if you to understand how to work on your feedback.

Hope it helps & all the best!

Hey there,

Definitely ask for feedback on development areas from the Partner rounds and then work on developing them in the mean time until you re-apply

But then when you work with them, consider practicing with a Coach or a MBB consultant that can really push you to help you produce higher quality answers

All the best

hey there!

I would recommend to ask for feedback on your interview, reflect on areas for improvement, gain more relevant experience, and prepare a stronger application for reapplication. Good luck!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear!

Happened to me too and then received a full-time offer 1.5 years later.

  • Make sure you build your resume to show significant improvements vs. last time when you applied (new experiences, impact, responsibilities, etc)
  • Get a coach to review your case performance and PEI and work on improving it

Reach out of you need help!

Cheers,

Florian

Call the recruiter and ask for feedback.

Also, consider applying to other firms to gain additional interview experience, but only apply to firms where you’d genuinely consider working.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, I would advise you to request feedback from your interviewers at McKinsey if you have not already done so. Without knowing what went wrong, it's impossible to work on it.
  • Moreover, I wrote a detailed article about this, which you can find here.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
