McKinsey Solve Game: Referral, Great Ecosystem, Red Rock Mistake – Interview Chances?

I just completed the McKinsey Solve game for ME offices. I want to mention that my application was submitted through a referral from an Engagement Manager, and I would say I have a pretty solid CV (already secured an offer from other T2 in the region). About my game performance:

  • I did pretty well in the Ecosystem Game
  • I messed up one calculation in the first part of Red Rock, which led to  wrong answers in the follow up questions since they were dependent on the previous answer.
  • However, I performed well in the second part of Red Rock, i believe i answered the 6 cases correctly

I am very disappointed that I misread one piece of information during the investigation in Red Rock, which led to me answering a few questions incorrectly.

What are my honest chances of getting invited for a first round interview?

Thanks!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, unfortunately, no one can seriously answer the question about your chances of success without looking over your shoulder.
  • However, generally speaking, a limited number of minor errors in a pre-interview assessment will not usually result in a rejection.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hey!

You still have a strong chance of getting invited! While the mistake in the Red Rock section may impact your score slightly, McKinsey considers the overall performance in the game along with your profile. Given your strong ecosystem performance, previous T2 offer, and referral, you’re still in a good position to advance. Stay positive!

Best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

Very tough to say from the outside as there are so many parameters that flow into the evaluation in the game, not just your product score (the outcome) but also the process score (the input).

Generally, making some minor mistakes does not automatically mean a rejection. But as said, it's difficult to provide a proper answer/estimate here.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome!

Cheers,

Florian

Only the recruiting team knows now so you only option is to wait. Consider applying to other firms in the meanwhile to diversify your risks.
