Hey there 😊,

If you’re applying to McKinsey as an industry expert (typically for an Experienced Hire or Expert track role), the Solve / Problem-Solving Game (PSG) requirement varies by role and office.

1️⃣ Do Industry Experts Have to Take Solve/PSG?

For Generalist Consulting Roles (Associate / Engagement Manager)Yes, many experienced hires still have to complete the PSG, even if they come from industry backgrounds.
For Expert Roles (e.g., McKinsey Digital, Operations, Sustainability, etc.)It depends on the role. Some skip Solve and go directly to case & fit interviews, while others may have an alternative assessment.
For Senior-Level Roles (Principal & Above)Typically not required—hiring is more focused on expertise, leadership, and business development capabilities rather than standardized assessments.

2️⃣ How to Confirm if You Need to Take It?

  • Your recruiter is the best source—they will tell you if the Solve assessment is required for your role.
  • If you’re applying to a niche expert role, you might skip Solve and go straight into case interviews focused on your industry knowledge.

3️⃣ Final Thoughts

💡 If you want to prepare just in case, practicing pattern recognition, logical reasoning, and quantitative problem-solving will help. But if you haven’t been explicitly asked to take Solve, don’t assume you have to.

Let me know if you need help with your McKinsey prep! Best, Alessa 😇

Hi there,

Q: Will McKinsey require the typical pre interview tasks if I am applying as an industry expert?

If you mean taking Solve, usually yes. I have helped candidates with 10 years of experience, and they were asked to take Solve. If you have doubts, you can ask HR and they should be able to confirm.

Good luck!

Hi there,

The PSG and Solve refer to the same thing (Problem Solving Game is the old name).

Yes, you would be required to take it.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

yes, the pre-interview tasks (PSG / Solve) are the same. Does not hurt to confirm this with your interviewer.

Best,
Sebastian

Just got rejected by McKinsey after final round of interview. I really want to fix the mistakes and re-apply. Any recommendations on way forward?
