McKinsey Location Selection Recommendation

Hello everyone,

I am currently preparing for my final round interview for the Experienced Hire Operations Associate role. I have the flexibility to choose from most U.S. office locations but need to finalize my selection before the interview.

I’m wondering if anyone knows which U.S. offices have a strong focus on operations practice. I’m looking for an office that is competitive in this area and has a strong presence of operational leaders. Does anyone in this forum have insight into which office might be the best choice? I’ve heard that the Chicago office is particularly strong in operations.

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Hey there,

Optimize living in a city that makes you happy and ticks off most of your boxes. With McKinsey, you can travel across the country on Operations projects and you'll find not all of them will be in one city.

Yes, it's true that Chicago is very good with general Ops, but you may want to be open to all the best Ops projects in the country. You may be happier living in your ideal city, and travelling to Chicago sometimes for work and other cities for other time

If you don't like or want to travel, sure - Chicago may be the one for you :-)

All the best!

Hi,

The Chicago office does have a lot of expertise in operations but by and large since operations is a functional area and not a vertical like healthcare, it is largely office agnostic. I would say think of what type of industries you would like to work in and choose the office location based on that. E.g., Texas for oil and gas, SFO for tech/pharma etc.

hey!

You're correct—Chicago is a strong choice for McKinsey’s Operations practice, as it has a well-established presence of senior operations leaders and projects in the space. Additionally, Atlanta and Houston are known for their focus on operations, especially in supply chain, manufacturing, and energy sectors. New Jersey is another hub for operations-focused work, particularly in pharmaceuticals and healthcare. I’d recommend selecting a location aligned with your industry interest and proximity preferences, as most offices offer solid opportunities in the practice. Good luck with your final round interview! 😊

Hi there,

You can actually ask this directly to HR or do a quick LinkedIn analysis of location and job positions, then reach out to relevant people (2-3) for a networking call. Great discussion starter!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, as almost all coaches are ex-consultants, you are unlikely to get an up-to-date perspective. Instead, I would highly advise you to 1) look at the leadership of McKinsey operations consulting on their website to find out and 2) talk to people in that specific practice/those specific cities.
  • Moreover, your professional success will not depend on how dominant a fairly common practice like operations is in a particular city, especially since you will be expected to be mobile anyway.
  • Lastly, I would highly advise you to consider all the relevant aspects involved in choosing a (preferred) city, such as standard of living, climate, friends in the area, etc.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
