Hello everyone. I applied tk Mckinsey in Oct and today I got invited for R1 interviews.Mck contacted me through my alternative email and didnβt see it unfortunately until they gave me a call today. They want me to do interview ASAP but I will make a fool of myself if I go ahead. I asked for the interview to he rescheduled for first week of February and they are not bulging. They asked me to reapply if I canβt take the interviews now. What do you advice? Should I decline and reapply later?
Interview Prep in 1 week for Mck Digital
Hey there,Β
Okay, there's a serious cost-benefit analysis we have to do here to guide an answer.Β
The worst case scenario of going for Round 1 of interviews is not performing well, getting a "Turndown" result and having to wait about 1 (or 18 months) to reapply. Also, in the process you'd have a rejection history attached to your profile. However, you'd also have experience in interviewing that would be more advantageous for when you try again
The best case scenario of everything is doing the best you can now and getting an offer! This may be possible if you do everything right in this next week! I've seen people pulling it off, but trust me - it's not easy
Then in between, re-applying would be a lower risk and (potentially) a lower reward option. If McKinsey want to fill this position now, they probably won't be looking to re-hire for this role for at least another 9 months to a year - in which case - why not take the chance and give it your all (because in this scenario, it's the same outcome of getting rejected but doesn't provide the same potential upside).
Please DM so we can chat more directly about your choices here. This is a delicate one and a lot of it also depends on just where you are in your preparation now and how much you are willing to put into preparation
All the best
Hey!
If you feel underprepared, consider whether you can dedicate the next week entirely to preparation. Focus on key areas like case structuring, problem-solving, and behavioral interviews. McKinsey Digital often emphasizes digital and technical insights, so brush up on relevant frameworks and industry trends. Declining and reapplying later is an option, but it may not guarantee a new opportunity soon. If youβre confident you can prepare effectively within a week, accept the challenge. Use resources like online coaching, mock interviews, and case practice intensively. Itβs a tight timeline but possible if you commit fully. Good luck! π

Dear Sender,
thank you for sharing this with the community. While it is an unpleasant situation you have to deal with, I would like to stress that it can happen to everyone of us as we are all human beings. So donβt worry, weβre here to help.
Regarding your decision I would like to give you the following answer: βIt dependsβ.
Especially, you should take the following aspects into consideration:
- How much time and other resources are you able to spend in the upcoming week for the interview preparation? (Do you have a full-time job and thus can only spend time in the evenings or are you able to prepare 24/7? Are you able to take interview coaching sessions?)
- Are you already familiar with βcase interviewsβ and the PEI interview? (It makes a huge difference if you are already familiar with consulting basics or not)
- Do you have a business background? (Even though consultancy firms increasingly are looking for experts, having a solid business understanding can help tremendously in the process)
Please note that declining the interview and reapplying later, could potentially leave you with disadvantages in upcoming recruiting processes.Β
Finally, please not that βover-preparationβ can be harmful as well. Of course that does not mean you should go into the interviews completely unprepared.
Hope that helps. Good luck for your decision and potentially the upcoming interview(s).
Best,
Birgit
Hello,Β
This is a tough situation, but Iβd recommend thinking about your readiness honestly. If you feel youβd perform poorly and that could hurt your chances long-term, reapplying later might be a smarter choice. McKinsey is open to reapplications, especially if you show significant improvement the next time around.
That said, if you think you can pull off a decent performance with focused prep, it might be worth giving it a shot. Many candidates underestimate themselves, and even if you donβt get through, the experience could give you a clearer picture of what to expect next time.
If you decide to go ahead, hereβs what Iβd do to prepare quickly:
- Focus on case basics: frameworks, structuring, and solving simple cases under time pressure.
- Get help: reach out to someone whoβs done case prep before, or even book a session with a coach if thatβs an option.
- Donβt neglect the PEI (fit) portion: Review McKinseyβs personal impact and entrepreneurial drive values, and have strong examples ready for behavioral questions.
If you decide to wait and reapply, use this time to thoroughly prepare and strengthen your skills. McKinsey values candidates who take the time to improve, so itβs about being strategic.
Good luckβtrust your instincts, and donβt let this decision discourage you!
Well, lesson learned.
Remember EVERYONE that you should be 80% case ready BEFORE you apply.
I advise you to get a coach. ASAP. Have the coach ssess and see if you are close enough and can be ready.
Additionally, please figure out your alternative email situation...that's on you! Setup automatic forwarding to your primary - and, don't give out your alternative email to something as important as a McKinsey application!
