How to Interpret My Bain R2 Performance – Do I Still Stand a Chance?

Hi everyone,

I recently completed R1 and R2 interviews (last week) for the Associate Consultant position at Bain, and I’m trying to gauge where I stand and whether I still have a chance. Here’s a breakdown of how things went:

Round 1:
I had two interviews: one fit and one case. Both felt solid overall. The only feedback I received was related to improving my case leadership, which I worked to address in R2.

Round 2:
This round included two interviews:

  • Senior Partner Interview: This interview included both a fit and case component. I felt this went well overall and showed stronger case leadership compared to R1.
  • Associate Partner Interview: This interview focused solely on the case and follow-up questions. It was more challenging, but here’s a breakdown:
    1. Initial Structure: I began with a clear structure and independently identified four revenue streams. However, I missed two key streams initially and was guided by the interviewer to uncover them.
    2. Quant (with estimation): I set up the calculations correctly and completed the math without issues, successfully analyzing the size of each revenue stream.
    3. Brainstorming: When generating ideas to increase revenue, I struggled to think quickly. The interviewer guided me to disregard two streams due to their nature. For another stream, I provided a structured response with two or three valid ideas but felt I could have done better with more time (had to come up with the ideas on the spot)
    4. Conclusion: My final recommendation was average. While I addressed the key points, earlier challenges in brainstorming and time constraints affected its overall impact.

My Questions:

  1. Based on this performance, do I still stand a chance for the AC position?
  2. Is the bar at Bain so high that these kinds of challenges in R2 could be disqualifying, or can strong overall performance with demonstrated improvement still get through?

I’d really appreciate any insights, especially from those who have been through a similar process or understand Bain’s evaluation criteria.

Hey there, 

It is difficult to ascertain what the outcome will be based on that feedback, but some general points I will make:

  • Generally there are set dimensions you are evaluated against from both Fit and Case perspective
  • Performance in R2 typically determines final outcome (i.e. does not use R1 outcomes)
  • Quality of answers count more than quantity (i.e. Partners care more about the accuracy and validity of what you are saying vs how many points you can generate)
  • Without knowledge of the interview assessment criteria, it is difficult to adequately determine your outcomes. (so patience will reveal all)

In my experience, candidates’ self-assessment of their performance is often biased and, more often than not, quite different from the interviewers’ perspective.

Only your interviewers truly know, so be patient and wait for an official answer.
