Bain Milan vs London office

Hi all,

I am considering to recruit for a Consultant position in Bain Milan vs London.

I am obviously applying also to BCG and McK and some T2 but have more visibility on the these two through friends.

Any of you has worked in both Milan and London offices? Can you describe the differences in terms of:

- WLB

- Salary

- Case Mix

- Culture

- Other policies

- other opportunities (e.g. transfers, externships)

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, as almost all coaches are ex-consultants, you are unlikely to get an up-to-date perspective on most of the criteria mentioned. Instead, I would highly advise you to reach out to consultants in both offices to inquire about these criteria.
  • Moreover, however, 1) the work-life balance should be quite comparable (and very personal), 2) the culture, other policies (whatever that means), and other opportunities should also be quite comparable, 3) the salary is easily researchable online, and 4) the projects obviously depend on the dominant consulting industries in the respective countries.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming applications, pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there!

Based on feedback from friends who work in both the Bain Milan and London offices:

1. Work-Life Balance (WLB)
    •    Milan: Generally better WLB due to a slower-paced environment.
    •    London: More demanding, though the firm tries to maintain a work-life balance.

2. Salary
    •    Milan: Lower salary compared to London, reflecting Italy’s cost of living.
    •    London: Higher salary and more competitive compensation.

3. Case Mix
    •    Milan: Primarily Italian and regional clients, less international exposure.
    •    London: More global clients, with diverse and complex cases.

4. Culture
    •    Milan: More relaxed, family-oriented, and close-knit.
    •    London: Fast-paced, high-performance-driven, but collaborative.

5. Other Policies
    •    Milan: More flexibility in vacation and working hours.
    •    London: More structured policies, particularly in career progression and promotions.

6. Opportunities (Transfers, Externships)
    •    Milan: Fewer international transfer opportunities, more regional focus.
    •    London: More opportunities for global transfers and external projects.

Ultimately, Milan offers a more relaxed environment with a regional focus, while London provides higher salaries, global exposure, and a more competitive pace.

Please DM me if you need help reaching out to people / need referrals, happy to help!

Best,
Evelina

I am surprised to hear about WLB. Milan is generally considered one of the worse ones, are you sure about what you are saying?

Hi there,

I've worked with candidates at both Bain Milan and Bain London, and there are some noticeable differences between the two offices:

  1. Work-Life Balance (WLB):
    • Milan: Generally better WLB due to fewer back-to-back projects and often a more relaxed culture, but this can vary depending on the team.
    • London: Known for being a bit more demanding, especially at the Associate/Consultant level. However, there's also a focus on flexible working options.
  2. Salary:
    • Milan: Slightly lower base salary compared to London, but the difference can be offset by the cost of living in Milan being lower.
    • London: Higher base salary, but the cost of living (especially housing) is significantly higher compared to Milan.
  3. Case Mix:
    • Milan: More focused on industries like luxury, fashion, and automotive, given the regional demand. The cases are often in those sectors, with a strong focus on Southern Europe.
    • London: More global in scope, covering a broader range of industries, including financial services, healthcare, and tech. Cases are typically more diverse in terms of geographies and sectors.
  4. Culture:
    • Milan: The culture tends to be more laid-back and personal, with stronger connections to local clients. Expect a collaborative and informal approach in the office.
    • London: The London office is more high-paced with a competitive edge, but there’s a strong emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and an active social culture outside of work.
  5. Other Policies:
    • Milan: The office is a bit more flexible when it comes to vacation policies and working hours. Also, you may find a bit more work-from-home options.
    • London: Policies are more structured, and you may have clearer career progression timelines, but expectations are higher in terms of hours worked.
  6. Other Opportunities:
    • Milan: The office is smaller, so fewer internal transfer opportunities to other offices unless you're specifically aiming for a role in Southern Europe. However, you may get unique projects with big global clients.
    • London: Offers more opportunities for externships and internal transfers, particularly to other global Bain offices. London is a bigger hub, so you’ll have more access to varied cases and exposure to top clients.

Both offices have strong reputations and offer unique opportunities depending on your personal career goals. If you're looking for a more relaxed work environment and a focus on Southern Europe, Milan could be a great choice. If you want more diversity in cases and a faster-paced, high-growth environment, London might suit you better.

Good luck with your decision, and feel free to reach out if you need further insights!

Thank you! It is the first time I hear that the London office has worse WLB than the Milan one...curious to hear from someone who worked in both

Hey there,

Honestly, WLB really depends on the nature of work you do. For example, if you do more transformation and long term engagements, you're more likely to have a better lifestyle than short-term strategy studies. So WLB will depend on the nature of work - but having said that, my experience is that Italian clients can be quite demanding :-)

Please reach out to consultants in these two offices to give a live perspective on these criteria.

All the best!
