Eligibility to Reapply – McKinsey & BCG

I applied for a Business Analyst (generalist) role at McKinsey about 3 months ago and was rejected after the HR screening. Am I allowed to apply now for a BA position in a specific practice (e.g., Global Energy & Materials) in the same office?

Also, I applied for an Associate role at BCG around the same time and was not selected. Can I now apply for the Visiting Associate in the same office?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi,

The purpose of the cooling off period is to ensure that when you do re-apply you have something significant and new to showcase as otherwise your application is likely to be rejected if it is the same. The restriction varies but most offices want at least 12 if not 24 months before you re-apply for a similar role.

This rule does not apply for a specialist/expert role. However, you do need to demonstrate significant expertise if you are interested in those roles. If you have for example Global Energy experience you can bring to the role you should re-apply. If on the other hand you are trying to see if this is one way to get in despite the earlier rejection it is unlikely to work.

Formally, no, you're typically not allowed to apply to the firm for the next year or so.

But they do make exceptions. What I'd do is reach out to the recruiter for the positon you're targeting and explain the situation. Better this way than finding out down the line that you're not eligible.

You might find this guide helpful as well when you re-apply:

Hi there,

There is a cool off period that varies from 6 to 12mintjs depending on the office, the stage you got rejected and the reason. If you have got rejected at both companies in the screening phase it may be that (1) your experiences and academic achievements are not enough or (2) and most probable, that you haven’t displayed them in the proper way in your CV. That happens even with seasoned professionals.

Evaluate what is your case. If it is (1), you’ll have to put an extra work to make your story more appealing. If it is (2), hire a coach to make your resume strong and consulting ready!

I may help you with that, as I have evaluated more than 100 resumes while at McKinsey and have passed CV screening for all MBB.
I offer a 20min free consultation if you’re seriously considering hiring a coach for this purpose, DM if that would be useful!

Best,

Mari

Hi,

For McKinsey,

The ban period is between 6m and 12m, you need to ask your HR/Recruiting team which because it varies per office and per role (internship/full-time).

Depending on how far along you got, you may be asked about what makes this time round different.

Happy to chat and good luck!

Hi Nicola,

Yes you can reapply for a different role in the same office after the ban period, which is typically 12 months. Note you need to clearly show you worked on your main points of improvement. In case of doubt, you can always reach out to HR of the specific office.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Mattijs, thanks for the answer. Do you mean for McKinsey or even BCG?

You are probably under a ban period of 12-18 months (sometimes 6 months) and should not be able to reapply right now.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear!

You can re-apply for different positions only after 12-24 months AND by submitting a substantially improved resume. For the second application, I would also get a strong referral.

All the best,

Florian
