McKinsey: Probability of getting an offer after the unsuccessful final interview

Hi, guys! So I had a final interview with McK 1.5 weeks ago and I still didn't get any response. Since I heard people who got the offer that they received the answer the same day or only a few days later, I am sure that my case is not definitive "yes", which makes sense because I did not do very well on the last interview.

HR said the interviewers will get together to discuss the result this week (half of which has passed, no response still). But I am not sure if this "joint discussion" is just a formality (with a 95% likelihood of the result being the "Reject") or if they are actually considering me as a candidate. Is there a chance that they might decide on extending the offer based on previous performance/strong candidate profile/other factors?

Basically, I would like to know if there is a hope or if is it just a long rejection.

Would be very grateful for any of your thoughts on that situation!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on completing the application process with McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, please keep in mind that it is simply not true that delayed feedback does imply a negative outcome. Thus, I do not see any reason to lose hope already.
  • Moreover, however, I would highly advise you to prepare for any outcome and continue with your job search or interview preparations with other consulting firms.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

At this point, the waiting time does not indicate anything - neither a rejection nor an offer.

If they have told you that they will discuss this week, then wait until the end of the week as most of the time such discussions happen on Friday afternoon - the one moment in a consultant's/interviewer's week when they actually have some space to do non-client-facing work. :-)

At the moment you are still in the running.

All the best and fingers crossed!

Florian

Let's not jump straight to conclusions!

While it's true that, very often, successful final round candidates are notified of their offer within a few days from the interview date, this is not a process set in stone.

Bear in mind that for the final round you might have interviewed with 3 or more partners. These partners need to align with one another to take their final decision on your case. With their packed agendas, it might take longer than one week. In case of a misalignment among them (i.e. two go for acceptance and one for rejections) there could also be the case where they ask you for have an additional interview. (this is what happened in my case!)

to sum it up, you already did everything you could and cannot control what happens next, so take some time to wind down and what for the final communications from the admission office

Best,

Pietro

Hi,

It’s understandable to feel uncertain after waiting for so long. Not hearing back immediately doesn't necessarily mean a rejection. In some cases, HR and interviewers need more time to make a final decision, especially if your overall profile and previous interviews were strong, but your last interview didn’t go as well.

The "joint discussion" could be more than just a formality, particularly if they see potential in your overall performance. There’s still a chance they’re considering you based on your earlier interviews, feedback, or other factors.

While waiting can be tough, there's still hope they are considering your overall profile, and if it doesn't work out, there are many other excellent consulting firms you can apply to.

Stay positive and patient!

All the best,

Kairavee

Please dont look too much into it. As much as we try to provide a timely response as much as we can, there are instances where interviewers simply 1) have not submitted their results 2) can't find time to have the actual evaluation meeting

No answer means no decision, so keep calmed :)

All your interviewers sit together in a debrief call to make a final decision on extending or not an offer. This discussion lasts around 15 minutes and it is done. Then HR will communicate to you the final decision.
