Deloitte Strategy, Roland Berger vs. EYP

Hi,

I have an option to join Deloitte Strategy (CH), Roland Berger (DACH) or EYP (UK) all at Engagement manager level. All positions involve approximately similar type of work (CDD; Growth, Market-entry, Profitability improvement) and location is not relevant factor for me.

I am trying to make the most informed decision optimising for exit opportunities (MBB or PE) and strongest brand. Which one would I be best off opting for?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offers!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, I wonder why you think “brand” is a meaningful criterion? I think the actionable part of it is already included in the other criterion “exit opportunities”.
  • Moreover, I would highly advise you to opt for the option that better aligns with your professional (and maybe even personal) mid- to long-term goals. In order to make an informed decision, I would advise you to do the following:
    • Weigh the different criteria that are meaningful to you independently of the current options (e.g., similarity of work to MBB or PE, culture, location, compensation). After that, score the three options based on your criteria and their weighting, resulting in three scores. This way, you have covered the left-brain perspective.
    • Critically assess your initial reaction to the outcome of the scores. For instance, if you feel the urge to tweak the numbers, this is a solid indicator that you do not want this decision to become reality. This way, you have covered the right-brain perspective.
    • By doing so, you will be able to integrate both parts of the brain into the decision-making, guaranteeing a higher chance that you will still be happy with it years later.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

The answer depends on the region where you plan to take the next step in your career. Research your target region on LinkedIn, focusing on MBB and PE firms. Look for trends in where professionals in these industries typically come from among the firms you’re considering.

1. Roland Berger (DACH) - gives you advantage in German PE, and MBB know you are in a market where RB is at par with them

2. EYP (UK) - very strong for CDD type of work in a PE activity center, that may help you a lot. And Parthenon brand is better than Deloitte brand.

3. Deloitte Strategy (CH). Much worse than RB for DACH or MBB; Much worse than EYP for PE.
