Big4 Opportunities in Italy

Hello,

I am looking forward to break into consulting in Italy, ideally with one of the Big4 firms, particularly Deloitte, as their values strongly align with my interests. I would be very grateful if you could give me some insights and answers couple of questions.

But before here is my background:

Education

1. Master’s in International Business and Management (National Technical University Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine, Dec 2023)

GPA: 4.9/5.0. University is ranked #1001-1200 globally, but in the top 5 in Ukraine.

2. Erasmus+ Exchange Program in Management (Poland).

Work experience

1. Philip Morris International (2+ years):

Finance Intern → AP Accountant (Ukraine & Poland) → Pricing Analyst (global scope, process improvements, advising other teams and colleagues; Poland).

2. Project Manager: Managed documentary film events across EU cities, including negotiations with government authorities.

3. Business Analyst: Consulting start-up (Business Architecture Lab).

Extracurricular activities

1. Participant in global consulting project “X-Culture.”

2. 3rd place in the "Golden Compass" marketing and PR competition.

3. Represented Ukraine as team lead in a German-Ukrainian student exchange program in Nürnberg.

Languages: English (C1/C2), German (C1), Polish (C1), Italian (B2, actively improving), Ukrainian and Russian (native).

I am relocating to Italy soon and am eligible to work there. I understand the Italian job market is very competitive, but I still have a hope.

Questions:

1. How common is it for Big4 firms in Italy to hire non-campus or non-fresh graduates for junior positions? As I don't have enough direct experience in management consulting, I'm looking for junior roles and internships.

2. If I secure an interview, will it likely be conducted in English (due to the international nature of the company) or Italian (given the local culture)?

3. Is applying directly through the website worth it, or are the chances minimal without internal referrals?

4. When is the best time to apply for junior roles in consulting in Italy, and how long is the typical hiring process? Because from one side I think I have to be fully prepared for every step of recruitment process, but from another I don't know if I am able to secure job interview at least.

It’s less common but possible if you show strong motivation, transferable skills, and a genuine interest in consulting. While campus recruitment is a primary channel, candidates with diverse academic backgrounds or professional experiences that align with consulting (e.g., problem-solving, communication, or analytical skills) can also succeed. Networking or building connections with employees at Big 4 firms can increase your chances.

2. If I secure an interview, will it likely be conducted in English or Italian?
It depends:
• English for international teams/clients.
• Italian for local roles.
Expect a mix of both to test your fluency in each language for consulting as you are dealing with both international and local clients.

3. Is applying directly through the website worth it, or are the chances minimal without internal referrals?
Applying directly is worth it, but internal referrals help you stand out. You can enhance your chances by networking on LinkedIn, attending events, and tailoring your application to the specific firm/role.

4. When is the best time to apply for junior roles in consulting in Italy, and how long is the typical hiring process?
Best Time: August–October (for full-time roles) or spring (for internships).

Hey! From my experience:

Big4 firms in Italy do hire non-campus or non-fresh graduates for junior roles, but it’s competitive. Your international experience can be an asset.
Interviews are usually in English, especially in international firms like Deloitte, but they may ask for some Italian proficiency depending on the role and location.
Applying directly through the website is worth it, but internal referrals can definitely boost your chances.
The best time to apply is usually in the fall (September-November), and the hiring process can take a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the role.

First of all, congratulations on your career trajectory thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

First of all, I would highly advise you to contact the recruiting departments regarding the first two questions and the question about the application process, as only they know for sure.
Moreover, securing a strong referral is a fairly easy task, so I would advise you to make that small effort to increase your chances of being invited to interviews.
Lastly, there is really no better or worse time to apply, as long as you are well into your preparation process. Unfortunately, this is an effort you will have to make, even if you do not yet know the outcome.
