Should I follow up?

Hello everyone!

I was interviewed for a Trainee position the 14 January and I had one interview directly with the manager and his assistant. No more steps are involved here. I think the interview went pretty good but you never know. The applications for trainee potisions were open from the 2 January to the 26 January and I haven't heard anything since then. I know that they are under a lot of work so I'm waiting but now I'm very nervous and impatient. Should I follow up? Can I benefit from that in case they are undecided about me?

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, I would advise you to follow up since two full weeks have passed.
  • Moreover, however, following up will not help you in terms of being chosen for the role.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Thank you for your answer! The interview was just one step and I did it directly with the audit manager and his assistant. Should I send him the email or the recruitment team or both?

Hey there,

Here's a general principle to follow for situations like this and similar ones in the future... After a sufficient amount of time, as is the case with this one, it is completely reasonable to follow up for feedback. It also shows initiative

As long as you do so in a professional and polite manner, it would be fine and encouraged!

All the best!

Hi,

Generally I would wait a minimum of ~2 weeks before following up. In the corporate context, I think it's fine to follow-up politely at this time now.

In the email you can ask when you could expect to hear the decision - this way if they respond, they can either reply directly with it or at least get back with an expected timeline.

Hello there,

Since it’s been over two weeks, a follow-up is appropriate. In your follow-up email, in addition to expressing your continued interest, consider these points that may set you apart:

  • Offer an Update: Briefly mention any new insights or developments since the interview that further reinforce your fit. For example, a recent project or relevant learning that aligns with the role can be a subtle nudge.
  • Clarify Next Steps: Ask if there’s additional information you can provide or if there’s a timeline for the next stage. This shows you’re proactive without being pushy.
  • Personal Touch: If you discussed a specific topic during your interview, refer to it again as a reminder of your genuine interest and connection with the team.
  • Polite Persistence: Close by thanking them again for the opportunity and expressing eagerness to hear from them soon.

This additional context can add value to your follow-up and keep you top-of-mind for the recruitment team. Good luck!

Best wishes,

Johannes

Hi, I recommend sending a polite follow-up email to inquire about any updates, as it can reinforce your interest and might help if they're still finalizing decisions—Best, Alessa

A follow-up is always recommended in such cases - you got to ask.

Hey,

Yes, you should definitely follow up. If they haven't gotten back to you themselves it's probably a rejection, but it's always best to know for sure so that you can move on and focus on applying to other firms.

Good luck!
Nick
