Regarding Internship interviews

Hi everyone,

I recently had three rounds of interviews for an operations internship. The first two rounds were with the operations manager and went really well. He even mentioned that he wasn’t sure why there was a third round. The final round was with the director and focused more on cultural fit. At the end, the director said the operations manager would get back to me next week (this was last Friday).

Interestingly, there was no HR involved in the process—it was directly with the managers. From my experience, I’ve noticed that companies usually respond quickly when they’re interested. It’s Monday now, and I’m wondering—should I wait a few more days or email them to follow up?

Hi there,

I think you should wait a few more days. It sounds like all your rounds went well and you've done everything you could to present yourself well.

Delays in responses often have less to do with the candidates and more with internal processes or just lack of time (e.g., the director running out of time to catch-up with the ops manager).

While it's good to appear enthusiastic in general, I would give them a few days in this case to get back to you.

Hope this helps,

Ariadna

Thanks for your reply! I also had a conversation with the operations lead on LinkedIn, and he mentioned that the operations manager, Thomas, is the one hiring for this process. After my third-round interview with the director, he mentioned that Thomas would get back to me. I feel like I had a good rapport with Thomas during the first two rounds. Do you think this decision would be more collaborative, or would it mainly rest with Thomas?

hi Souvik - it's very hard to know exactly what happens between them, but typically such decisions are more collaborative (regardless of who communicates back the answer) than not. Fingers crossed that you hear backs oon and the answer is a positive one!

Hi there,

give it some time still. Many people only get back from holidays this week. The delay you are experiencing is still minor at this point. You can follow up if you haven't heard back by Thursday or so.

Fingers crossed

Thanks for the suggestion! My interview with the operations director was last Friday, and now it’s Monday—the waiting period is honestly the most nerve-wracking part for me. I did email the operations manager this morning, asking when I might expect feedback. Now I’m just waiting to hear back.

Hi Souvik,

It sounds like your interviews went really well, and the direct involvement of managers is a good sign—they’re clearly invested in finding the right fit.

While waiting can feel nerve-wracking, it’s still early in the week, and it’s common for decisions to take a few days, especially without HR facilitating the process. I’d suggest waiting until midweek (Wednesday or Thursday) before following up. If you don’t hear back by then, a polite email to the operations manager to thank them again and inquire about the status of your application would show initiative without seeming impatient.

Good luck—you’re in a great position!

Hey there,

I'd give it a few more days before reaching out and following up. By the end of the week should be reasonable.

Consulting timelines and turnaround times are rarely influenced by performance of candidates, so don't read too much into that. I've witnessed so many candidates getting their offers and positive feedback much later than they expected - so stay positive and hopeful in the mean time!

All the best!

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually emailed the operations manager this morning, asking when I might expect feedback. Just waiting to hear back from them now.

I think differently from other comments.

If they committed to a deadline, I encourage you to follow up—being proactive is an essential consulting skill.

However, keep in mind that a lack of response at this time of year is most likely due to the holiday period.

Don’t jump to conclusions too soon.

Best,

Alberto

Thanks for the perspective! But I actually spoke with both manager & director just last week, so I’m not sure if the delay is really due to the holidays.

Hi there,

To think through the risks of following up vs. not following up during interviews here:

  • If follow up: worst case the company thinks you are overly proactive and maybe a little desperate for this job :)
  • If not follow up and wait: they may actually get stuck somewhere, you are probably super anxious and can't focus on other things, and who knows if someone actually dropped a ball somewhere and just forgot

Different parts of the world may have different cultures, and I am based in the US, so I could be a bit biased. Could totally be true that in some countries being overly proactive may come across negatively. In U.S. scenarios, I would always follow up when it is past the promised deadline.

Fun fact: I once waited for 3 weeks for an interview with a well-acknowledged firm and it turned out the HR mistook me with another candidate and completely forgot to schedule my next round :)

All the best,

Han

Hi there,

Q: It’s Monday now, and I’m wondering—should I wait a few more days or email them to follow up?

I would recommend waiting for one week from the day of the interview. If you still haven’t heard by then, it is fine to follow up.

Good luck!

Francesco

Thanks for the advice! But don’t you think that when companies are really interested in a candidate, they tend to reach out faster? Just curious about your thoughts on that.

Hi Souvik, it depends on several factors, the holiday period might impact the speed of replies for example. Also, some companies are quite slow with replies, regardless of whether a candidate is sucesfull or not. Hope this helps!

Hi Souvik,

First of all, congratulations on going through the entire application process!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • I would highly advise you to wait until the end of the week. Since the director mentioned that the manager would contact you next week and it's only Tuesday now, giving them the full time they mentioned is respectful and shows patience.
