Why move from Deloitte to BCG

Hello everyone,

I have an upcoming interview with BCG (first round), and I was referred by someone in the same office. Currently, I am working at Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst, and I have almost 2 years of experience. My friend told me to prepare answers to the below questions regarding my potential transition from Deloitte to BCG (strategic consulting), I would appreciate your help with the following:

1. Why do you want to move from Deloitte Consulting to BCG?

2. What similarities and differences do you see between Deloitte and BCG? (I have conducted extensive research on this topic, but I would appreciate guidance on how to approach this question effectively.)

3. Can you tell me about your work experience at Deloitte? Are there any specific reasons motivating your decision to change firms? (I have personal and professional reasons, but I want to avoid sharing any negative thoughts. I'm unsure of the best way to approach this question.)

4. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for the FIT portion of the first interview for someone considering a transition from Deloitte to BCG?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello! Congratulations on securing an interview with BCG.

When discussing why you want to move from Deloitte Consulting to BCG, focus on the unique opportunities and experiences that BCG offers. Highlight your desire to work on more strategic and high-impact projects, the reputation and prestige of BCG in the industry, and the chance to work with top-tier clients. Emphasize how BCG's focus on strategy consulting aligns with your long-term career goals and aspirations.

When discussing the similarities and differences between Deloitte and BCG, it's important to strike a balance. Acknowledge the similarities in terms of the consulting skillset, client engagement, and problem-solving approach. However, also highlight the differences, such as BCG's exclusive focus on strategy consulting, its reputation for delivering high-impact results, and its strong emphasis on thought leadership and innovation. This shows that you have done your research and understand the unique value proposition of BCG.

When discussing your work experience at Deloitte and the reasons motivating your decision to change firms, focus on the positive aspects of your experience at Deloitte. Highlight the skills and knowledge you have gained, the projects you have worked on, and the valuable client interactions you have had. Then, transition to discussing your desire for new challenges, the opportunity to work on more strategic projects, and the chance to be part of BCG's renowned culture of excellence and impact. Avoid sharing any negative thoughts about Deloitte and instead focus on the positive aspects of your decision to pursue new opportunities.

For the FIT portion of the interview, it is important to demonstrate your alignment with BCG's values and culture. Showcase your teamwork and leadership skills, your ability to think critically and analytically, and your passion for problem-solving. Highlight any experiences at Deloitte where you have demonstrated these qualities and how they have prepared you for a successful transition to BCG.

Remember to be authentic, confident, and enthusiastic throughout the interview. Showcase your passion for consulting and your genuine interest in joining BCG. Good luck with your interview, and I hope you find these suggestions helpful!

Hi,

congratulations on your interview invitation. Whatever you say in answer to the questions has to be authentic and believable in order to have a positive impact. So you need to have your own reasons. Providing cookie-cutter responses won't really work because then you will be saying the same as 80% of the candidates.

In your situation it might make sense to get together with a coach to go over your holistic approach for the FIT interview since it will also cover other elements.

Hi,

I faced a similar situation when I switched from Kearney to BCG. Sharing some quick thoughts on your questions:

  • Your answers need to be specific and personalized to your context / office geography
  • You can get some general points from the forum here, but really they will be general and what you can google
  • The real trick is really melding the general truths with the specificity of your experience
  • In terms of your motivation (qn #3), just focus and emphasize on the positives of what BCG will give you

All the best!

Here's the thing. These questions seems to be about your motivation, and about what You see in BCG (vs. Deloitte).

I invite you to think about this differently. These are questions about what you can bring to the table, and how you can fit better in BCG than in Deloitte (or in other words, why should BCG hire you, and why you would be a good fit for BCG).

Hi there!

I suggest that you put your answers there first so we can provide feedback on them. You can even provide them as high-level bullet points without getting too personal about the answers. (ideally post it as a separate question so we notice it better).

I see also that Frederic already provided a few good suggestions. To add to that, make sure that all your answers are top-down: you start with a direct answer to the question you were given, then you move into a story that substantiates that statement, then you sum it up and go back to the initial statement.

Additionally, make sure that you leverage knowing people who are already in BCG. It's a huge asset to know from them what BCG is really like and in particular the office you're aiming for.

Best,
Cristian
