Which one is recommended: Economist vs. Bloomberg?

Hi all, I am starting my position in consulting soon. As a result, I want to strengthen my business acumen and also develop the habit of reading.

Would you recommend "Economist", or "Bloomberg"? Economist seems to be more view-based but focuses more on social & politics, whereas Bloomberg seems to be more fact-based but purely focuses on business. I've seen some coaches on this website advocating Economist, and their analysis & charts seem well-crafted. However, I feel that it is focusing too much on non-business topics.

With my objective of improving "business acumen", I am wondering whether Bloomberg seems to be a better choice for me?

Appreciate your suggestions and advice.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming consulting career start!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • Is this endeavor just for your upcoming consultant role or for yourself?
  • If it's the former, I would highly advise you not to worry. All major consulting firms will provide you with excellent onboarding and training that will prepare you for everything you need to know.
  • In the latter case, I would advise you to try both and choose the one you enjoy more.

Hey!

Interesting question! I would recommend the following:

To strengthen business acumen, Bloomberg might be a better choice since it focuses heavily on business, markets, and finance, offering real-time, fact-based insights.

However, The Economist is also valuable for a broader understanding of global trends, politics, and economics, which are important for consulting.

If you aim to improve business knowledge, start with Bloomberg, but complement it with The Economist for a well-rounded perspective.

Best,

Alessa

Hi there,

I would approach this from two angles:

  1. What are you more interested in personally? If you want to create a habit, you should at least enjoy it somewhat
  2. Business sense is important but what's arguable more important is to be a well-informed and well-rounded character, hence the Economist might be the better choice because of its broader coverage

Cheers,

Florian

For macro or geopolitical, The Economist is better.

For business, Bloomberg.

Actually, I would read both. Read both and apply critical thinking to both. That's more important than just going through the articles without some deliberate effort.
