I have a BSc from Bocconi University and nearly 2 years of experience working in the consulting arm of a Big4. I've noticed that most (if not all) employees in the Italian offices hold Master's degrees. Is holding an advanced degree a prerequisite for junior positions in the firm? If so, would significant consulting experience be sufficient to compensate for not holding an advanced degree?
What degree do I need to apply to McKinsey in Italy?

Hello!
While a Master’s degree is the norm for junior roles at McKinsey Italy, it is not an official requirement. With a BSc from Bocconi and nearly two years of Big 4 consulting experience, you could still be considered, though the bar for screening may be higher. To strengthen your application, leverage referrals and emphasize problem-solving skills, leadership, and impact in your experience. While a Master’s could improve your chances, don’t let this discourage you from applying—especially if you have a strong internal recommendation.
Let me know if you need any further advice - happy to help!
Best,
Evelina

Hey!
In McKinsey Italy, having a Master’s degree is the standard for junior positions, but it’s not always a strict prerequisite. Your BSc from Bocconi and nearly two years of consulting experience at a Big4 could make you a competitive candidate, especially if you have strong problem-solving skills and a solid track record. However, not having a Master’s might put you at a slight disadvantage compared to other applicants. You could still apply and see how they assess your profile or consider pursuing a Master’s to maximize your chances. Let me know if you need help refining your application! 😊

Hello there,
Based on the BA job ad for the McKinsey offices in Milan or Rome—which states “typically, an undergraduate degree with less than 4 years of work experience; Requirements may vary by country or practice”—your BSc from Bocconi and nearly two years of Big4 consulting experience should position you well as a competitive candidate. Although many in these Italian offices hold Master’s degrees, the BA roles in Milan and Rome are clearly accessible to undergraduates.
Since recruitment practices can differ, I’d recommend reaching out directly to HR at the Milan or Rome offices for definitive guidance on how they evaluate your profile.
Let me know if you need help refining your application—or any other support as you prepare. I’d be happy to assist!
Best wishes,
Johannes

Hi there,
To apply to McKinsey in Italy, a Master's degree is often preferred. However, your BSc from Bocconi and nearly two years with a Big4 are strong credentials. McKinsey values a combination of academic excellence and practical experience, so significant experience can sometimes offset the lack of a Master's.
Moreover, consider networking with current McKinsey consultants and attending recruitment events. These interactions can provide deeper insights into what McKinsey values most and how you can best position yourself as a candidate.
If pursuing a Master's fits your goals, it could enhance your candidacy, but it's not strictly necessary if you have substantial experience and achievements to highlight.
If you need coaching to prepare for your application, feel free to reach out. I am Italian and I'm here to help you navigate the process and strengthen your application.

Hi,
McKinsey always take into account the entire application to decide upon which candidates receive interview offers. Education (master, PhD and/or MBA) is an important parameter, but no hard pre-requisite.
Good luck with the preparations.

Hi there,
Q: Is holding an advanced degree a prerequisite for junior positions in the firm? If so, would significant consulting experience be sufficient to compensate for not holding an advanced degree?
In Italy, MBB have historically hired candidates with a master’s degree due to the structure of the Italian education system (most candidates do both a bachelor and a master, and if you don’t do so, it generally has a negative signaling effect).
Having said that, I have personally helped a candidate to get into Bain Milan with only a bachelor, so it is possible to join without a master, at least for some firms.
In your case, I believe a bachelor + consulting work experience could be sufficient for at least some firms, in particular if you manage to find a referral. You can find more on referrals below:

Good luck!

Hi there,
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:
- First of all, I would highly advise you to research whether or not having a Master's degree is a requirement to know for sure.
- Moreover, even if it is more common to have a Master's degree when working at McKinsey Italy, it doesn't have any impact on you as long as it is not a requirement.
You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.
If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey applicaiton, pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
Best,
Hagen

Hey there,
Short answer => No, an advanced degree is not a prerequisite.
Slightly longer answer :-) => It could help increase your chances during the screening phase of the recruitment journey. However, recruiters will look at other elements in your CV and profile, like achievements, experience, problem solving ability, academic scores, history of high performance, etc. So I'd definitely try reflect high levels on all these areas, and not just focus on advanced degree.
All the best
