Upcoming Interview In 2 Days

I have 2YOE at a boutique consulting firm and haven't done any cases since college. Even in college, the amount of cases I've done were minimal.

Applied to a digital strategy consultant position a while ago and passed the 1st round this week. Tuesday will be round 2 with a 45 min. case study. This role revolves around digital strategy & AI. Not MBB or B4. This is an in house consulting role in industry.

There are so many different types of cases I can practice on, which ones should I even focus on???

I'm pretty much cramming at this point so I'm trying to not waste time on anything I don't need to study.

How to Break Into MBB 101: Mastering the Interview (Ex-McKinsey EM with 5+ years of consulting interviewing experience)

As you get ready for your consulting interview, don't stress about mastering specific cases. Instead, focus on building the right habits. What really matters is your ability to break down any problem into smaller parts and come up with a solid hypothesis to test. This way, you'll be prepared no matter what case you face.

Remember, every client’s problem is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. By practicing how to ask the right questions, simplify the problem, and think things through logically, you'll feel confident walking into your interview. Just focus on breaking it down and testing your ideas—that’s what will help you shine.

1400 5-star reviews across platforms | 500+ offers | Highest-rated case book on Amazon | Uni lecturer in US, Asia, EU

Hi there,

Practice 3 things:

  1. The right steps on how to tackle each part of a case
  2. The right thinking techniques (e.g., to create broad and deep frameworks, spot hidden insights on a chart, etc)
  3. The right communication

1+3 are easy to learn. 2 takes some practice.

You can find all 3 things in my book The 1%: Conquer Your Consulting Interview - maybe you can still get it as a Kindle version, even if time is limited!

Don't go in the direction of learning specific case types or objectives. This approach does not work anymore for at least 15 years…

All the best,

Florian
