Hello!
I recently applied for McKinsey & Co. after a virtual event focused on the LATAM offices, when applying it gives you the selection to choose 3 offices, and rank them with points, which should add up to 60 total points. I am currently finishing my master's in Dallas but I am an international student, I chose my country of birth as my first choice (this country is in LATAM), then Toronto, Canada, and finally Dallas, TX. When I apply, am I being considered for all the locations selected or just my first?
Thank you for any help given!
McKinsey Location Selection
Hi there,
There's no concrete answer here on how to optimize this!
However, what I can recommend is picking the 1-2 offices where you legitimatelly have a connection and apply to those.
If you have never worked in Canada, never been there, and don't have rights to work in Canada, I would focus on Texas and your home country.
You need to 1) Have evidence on your resume that you know/understand/can work in the target office country and (ideally) 2) have networked with people in that office. Otherwise you're just another name on the table!
Think about it, if you were a recruiter in Canada and you looked at your resume (amongst all the other thousands), would you interview you?
===========================
In general, I recommend candidates apply to offices where they have any of the following (the more the better):
- Citizenship/working rights
- Prior work/life experience (i.e. a job or education in the city/country)
- Personal network / referral
It doesn't hurt to put your 1st selection as your "Reach" office and another as your safety.
Make sure to network!
Best of luck!
Hi!
To be fair, this ordering of locations is an antiquated system because in +90% of cases, it's the first preference that decides whether you move on or are rejected.
So always have your first option as your absolute preference.
There are situations when your first office might not have extra capacity for hiring, but they believe you have a lot of potential, and thus, they put you in touch with a partner office (which is your second option in terms of preference).
Good luck!
Cristian

Hi there,
Unless recruiting targets are already covered, you are directly considered for your first option.

Hi there,
Q: When I apply, am I being considered for all the locations selected or just my first?
You will be considered for the first office as a first step. If the application is not deemed suitable, it will be moved to the second for their consideration. If you are rejected from the second, it will then move to the third.
Good luck!
Francesco
Primarily for the first office. If they decline your profile it will be sent to the other offices for consideration.
Hi,
these offices are all in different geographies with different management teams, business needs and budgets. You can assume that they will start with the consideration for your top priority but not involve all of your 3 preferences at once.
Good luck
One thing to consider is the difference on projects and practices for each office. You can have a good profile for one and not for another. And applying to your home country is normally a good move as there is no issue with regards visas and etc.
Hi there, your options will be considered starting top to bottom. As Ian correctly pointed out, you should have convincing indicators as to why you are a good match for an office to have a chance + current hiring needs. Warm regards, Freddy
Hi,
The best is to really make a choice that speak to your heart. The selection will be mainly based on the first choice.
Cheers,
They go one by one. Meaning, they will offer your CV to that specific office; if they don't want it, it will be offered to the 2nd office, and so on.
