Struggling to Pass McKinsey's CV Screening Despite Strong Referrals and Experience – Seeking Advice

Hello,

I just received the unfortunate news that I didn’t pass the CV screening at McKinsey for the third year in a row, and I honestly don’t understand why. I even got a referral from a senior person in the office I applied to, and a partner mentioned that it was a good time to apply.

For the past 2-3 years, I’ve been applying to management consulting positions and passing the CV screening about 80-90% of the time. I’ve reached final and second-round interviews with other MBB firms and even have an offer from a top tier 2 firm in the Middle East.

However, with McKinsey, it seems impossible. My CV keeps getting stronger year after year, I’ve always networked, received referrals, but I still never make it past the CV screening.

Does anyone else relate to this? What could be the reason? And can I still apply to McKinsey in other offices? I only chose one office in my application.

Thanks!

Hey,

I definitively get your concern and I am sorry to hear!

It sounds like you're in a strong position overall, but McKinsey's CV screening can be particularly tough due to high competition. Here are 2 factors that might help explain your situation and offer some advice:

  1. CV Tailoring: McKinsey places heavy emphasis on impact, leadership, and problem-solving. Review your CV specifically from the McKinsey lens—are you demonstrating quantifiable results, leadership experiences, and strategic thinking clearly and concisely? It might be worth revisiting with a focus on how each line aligns with McKinsey’s values.
  2. Feedback and Networking: If possible, ask for specific feedback on your application, especially if you have contacts in the office. You may learn about subtle areas for improvement. Continuing to network with consultants and partners could provide more tailored advice for your application.

    Hope this helps!
