Strategy consulting applications as an experienced hire

I am a 9 years experienced consultant with a background in manufacturing and technology consulting. I am working for a big 4 now. I wish to get into pure strategy consulting. How can I do that?

1. What positions should I apply for ? (I don’t see lots of senior positions like Manager and upwards open on career websites)

2.Are firms in Europe  open for only English speaking professionals? Which are they?

3.I have already started preparing for cases and CV. But I would like to continue only if I get a shortlist for an interview. How can I increase chances of that?

Hi there,

I would suggest the below;

1. Positions to Apply For
    •    Target Roles: With 9 years of experience, consider applying for Senior Associate or Manager positions. However, be open to Consultant roles if higher-level positions are limited.
    •    Boutique Firms: In addition to major firms, explore opportunities at boutique consultancies like EY-Parthenon, Roland Berger, OC&C, and Kearney, which may offer roles aligning with your expertise.

I can help you prepare for any of the above firms (feel free to DM me)

2. Language Considerations in Europe
    •    English-Friendly Markets: Cities such as London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Copenhagen, and Dublin often have firms operating primarily in English.
    •    Firm Policies: Global consultancies, including McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and EY-Parthenon, typically accommodate English-speaking professionals in these locations.

3. Enhancing Interview Shortlisting Chances
    •    CV Optimization: Emphasize strategy-related achievements in manufacturing and technology sectors, quantifying results where possible.
    •    Networking: Engage with current employees through platforms like LinkedIn to seek referrals, which can significantly boost your application prospects.
    •    Focused Applications: Apply to positions that closely match your background, such as roles in digital transformation or operational strategy, to leverage your existing expertise.

Best,
Evelina

Hey!

With 9 years of experience in manufacturing and technology consulting, transitioning into pure strategy consulting is definitely possible. Typically, you'd aim for positions like "Manager" or "Project Leader," but since those roles aren't always posted publicly, networking is key. Connecting with consultants and recruiters at MBB and top firms can help you understand internal hiring needs and increase your chances.

Regarding language requirements, many firms in Europe prefer local language proficiency, but English-only roles do exist, especially in international hubs like London, Amsterdam, or certain Middle Eastern offices. Firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain often have opportunities for English speakers, particularly in digital, operations, or specialized practices.

To boost your chances of getting shortlisted, ensure your CV highlights strategic impact in your current role, leverage referrals from your network, and focus on tailoring your applications to align with the firm’s practice areas that fit your background. Keep preparing for cases in parallel—you might get an interview invite faster than expected. Let me know if you need any help!
