Research intern at MBB, what should i do next?

Hi everyone,

I recently pick up a job as a research analyst intern at MBB this summer in my country. I didn't really have much of a choice since the market was really bad and thought at least the brand name still helps out. I am wondering how I should proceed in the future. I am currently very interest in Finance, looking at IB or Asset Management, but will to take the long road.

How well is this role going to help with this endeavor, and since its an internship, is there a chance I can pivot to becoming a summer BA next summer? I am also thinking of applying to Mck or Bain as a BA intern in case it doesnt work out here next summer.

Thank you!

Hi Derrick,

It depends on many factors, external (economy, hiring demand, etc.) and internal (your profile, GPA, other work experience, etc.) but if your goal is to move to a consulting position with an MBB, start with your current firm.

  • Network with EMs and partners
  • Offer your help on topics outside of your scope (while making sure your core work is exceptional)
  • Tell your colleagues and HR about your plans
  • Stay visible across the firm

If you play it well, you might get short-tracked for a consultant position interview or at least get a referral.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi Florian, Thank you for your response. I am currently 2/3 way through my intern, got to do alot of CDDs research thankfully. I took a gap semester so I wanted to ask them for internship during the fall of 2024, in which the only position available in CTA for 3 months, and hopefully I can get a referral for BA next summer. Otherwise, I am in the process of interviewing at EY S&T arm in case my plan at bcg falls through. As far as I know, CTA only does ad-hoc stuff and function contractually instead of an internship. I am wondering if this is worth it or I should just take the EY S&T office (in business valuation and modeling team) this fall and aim for intern next summer at MBB. Best, Derrick

Hi Derrick,

I think for answers to be helpful to you it would be important to provide more details on your background including college, GPA, other work experience etc. Or you can DM me your resume as well.
