OW vs MBB in the ME: how Much Does It Matter in the Long Run?

Hi! I’m from Europe and have recently secured a consulting role at OW in the Middle East. I’m incredibly happy and proud of myself since joining a top-tier consulting firm has been my goal since finishing my master's 2 years ago.

That said, my ultimate ambition has always been MBB, and I can’t help but feel some FOMO. I tend to be hard on myself and constantly feel the need to aim higher (I know it’s not always the healthiest mindset).

My question is: how does working at OW compare to MBB, particularly in the Middle East? I'm curious about the differences in terms of the learning curve, prestige, and exit opportunities. Does it really make a significant difference in the medium to long term?

I’m aware that OW is known for being one of the top-paying firms in the ME, but I’m also interested in how the other factors stack up, especially since I plan to return to Europe eventually.

Am I over complicating things?

Thanks!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer from Oliver Wyman!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, it really depends on what you make of it, whether it's what you learn or where you work after consulting.
  • Moreover, MBB does (most times) have a higher prestige, but the question is who really cares about this rather elusive concept besides applicants. Therefore, I would highly advise you not to worry and instead enjoy your upcoming consulting career start.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming role at Oliver Wyman, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey, congratulations on securing the role at OW! It’s a great achievement, and you should be proud. OW is a top-tier consulting firm, especially well-regarded in the Middle East, and your experience there will be valuable :) I am sure!

In terms of comparing OW to MBB, there are some key differences. MBB often enjoys higher prestige globally and may have more structured career paths with broader brand recognition, especially for exit opportunities. However, OW is known for its expertise in financial services and strong growth in various sectors. The learning curve at OW is also steep, particularly in the Middle East, where consulting demand is booming.

In terms of exit opportunities, MBB may offer more high-profile roles in certain sectors, but OW still provides excellent paths, especially in industries like finance and government. Many consultants from OW successfully move to senior roles in corporations or transition into MBB later.

As for the learning curve and career development, both firms offer intense, fast-paced environments, with a focus on problem-solving and client management. The experience at OW, especially in a rapidly growing market like the Middle East, will be a strong asset for you in Europe as well.

Overall, you're in a great position. It’s natural to have some FOMO, but OW will offer significant opportunities for learning and career progression. You’re not overcomplicating things, but it’s important to appreciate the value of the path you’re on. You can always pivot to MBB later if that’s still a goal.

Hope this helps,

Alessa

Hey there,

First of all, congratulations! Securing an offer at OW, especially in the current market, is a huge accomplishment, so take a moment to really appreciate that.

I completely understand your drive to aim for MBB – it's something many people feel, and it’s never a bad think to be ambitious. However, let’s put things into perspective: you’ve got an offer at a top firm, in a competitive and highly paid market, and in one of the fastest-growing regions for consulting. This already places you in an excellent position.

You’ve also got a valuable foothold in the Middle East, which opens up a lot of opportunities. My suggestion would be to give OW and the region a chance first. See how you enjoy the work, the culture, and the lifestyle. If after 1-2 years you still feel drawn to MBB, you’ll be in a stronger position to make the transition. Moving from a top-tier firm like OW to MBB in the Middle East is quite common, and I’ve supported many in your position to make this shift successfully.

Ultimately, you’re already in a position of strength, so you’ve got options. Enjoy the journey, and don’t rush it!

Cheers,
Florian

Congratulations on securing the offer at OW! That's a fantastic accomplishment, and you're stepping into a great opportunity. OW is highly regarded, particularly in the Middle East.

When comparing OW and MBB, while MBB enjoys greater global recognition and prestige, OW has carved out a strong niche, especially in the public sector in the Middle East. The experience you’ll gain there will be both challenging and highly rewarding, providing you with a steep learning curve in a dynamic market.

In terms of career progression, MBB may have more visibility for high-profile roles globally. Many OW alumni successfully move into senior leadership roles or even transition to MBB later on if they choose.

Hi,

First off, congratulations on securing the role at OW in the Middle East! That’s a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud of yourself.

If you still have doubts, I’d recommend applying to MBB and going through their recruiting process. Beyond prestige, what’s most important is how well you fit with the culture. The recruiting day is a great opportunity not only for them, but also for you to see how the recruiters and consultants make you feel, and if there's a good fit. I’d suggest going with the company where you feel the best match and strongest gut feeling.

Yes, MBB does generally carry more prestige, but in the long run, it depends on where you want your career to lead you. Career paths can change, and it’s hard to predict where you’ll be down the line. What matters is finding the right environment for your growth. Also, smaller consulting firms like OW often provide the advantage of greater responsibility early on and more flexibility in shaping your career path, rather than following a strict, predefined route.

Good luck, and trust your instincts!

Since you don't have an offer from an MBB, you are definitely overcomplicating things.

Does everyone know whether MBBs, as well as Second Tier strategic consulting firms are hiring in Middle East for entry level roles, no arabic speakers? I heard for example Bain applications have been closed for a while, does everyone know when and if they will reopen? Thanks!
