Time to apply and the intake for new hire?

Hi all,

I am currently in the final year of my PhD program in the UK and anticipate graduating in September of this year. I am keen to transition into management consulting (MC) and have observed that both BCG and Bain typically open applications for advanced degree candidates in September, with a deadline in October 2024.

If I choose to apply in that recruitment cycle, I am curious about the general timeline. I have come across information suggesting that it can take 6-8 weeks until an offer is made. While I understand that specific timelines may vary based on firms and locations, I am wondering, in general, when MBB firms typically have their new hires start. I ask because ideally, if I receive an offer, I would like to commence my role around January 2025. I realize this may sound optimistic, but for personal reasons, having an estimated timeline would greatly assist with planning and preparations.

This can, of course, vary slightly based on the specific firm and location, but it's a good general guideline.

Once an offer is extended, the start date can be quite flexible. Most MBB offices are accommodating when it comes to aligning your start date with your personal circumstances and preferences. In many cases, you can negotiate a start date up to a year after receiving your offer.

Given your timeline, aiming to start in January 2025 is certainly realistic and should be feasible. It's always a good idea to communicate your preferred start date early in the recruitment process to ensure it aligns with the firm's planning and capacity.

Agree with Florian here. Your timelines are right, and, in general, you can discuss your starting date. That said, generally roles like these start in the summer.

Importantly, you won't truly “know” until you actually go through the process and physically get an offer. At that point you can negotiate/talk to them.

Ultimately, January would be the earliest you could start, with it likely being later. Importantly, you would KNOW your start date when you get the offer, so you would have plenty of time to planning/prepare :)

Indeed, it depends on the region (and how bad the state of the economy is at that point). But in short, it's not unrealistic to expect starting in January.

I know of several examples of candidates going through the recruitment process in October in Germany and starting mid-Jan.

This, however, is beyond your control. Once you have the offer, you can negotiate the starting date with them and try to move it earlier. If you have a good reason it should be possible.

In parallel, make sure that you apply to other roles as well.

the timelines in the recruiting process from submission of your application to potential offer have taken longer recently so I would factor in 2-3 months to be on the safe side.

The typical starting times vary by geography. The US has a lot of new joiners start in January and September whereas countries that have year-round recruiting (like Germany) have people join year round as well.

Once you receive and offer, you can typically discuss your starting date with the firm and especially the bigger ones are usually quite flexible with that).
