McKinsey background check in London

Hi all,

I’m set on accepting offer from McKinsey as an experienced hire. I was planning on giving notice once I had all the paperwork done and sorted including background checks.

I’ve spoken to HR and they have told me background checks happen 6-8 weeks before start date and even if I were to accept now they wouldn’t begin this process yet and so encouraged me to give notice ASAP before background checks.

Is this normal at McKinsey in Europe/London?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I don't know specifically for McKinsey, but for BCG London sounds normal. I was a transfer, but actually got my background check done after I was already employed (will be different though for a new joiner).

Similarly, I think your final contract is also something you receive closer to the start date - in the meantime most people take the offer at face value.

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your question:

Q: I’ve spoken to HR and they have told me background checks happen 6-8 weeks before start date. Is this normal at McKinsey in Europe/London?

I am not sure about the exact timeline for the background check, but if everything you reported in your application material is correct, you don’t have to worry about it. It’s a routine process to be sure that what you reported is true. If that’s the case, once you have signed the contract, you can give notice without issues.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

Honestly, consider your start date, your legal / contractual notice period, as well as any time off you need, and give your notice based on that.

If this is AFTER the background check, better - if it is not… don't wait for the background check.
