Lateraling to MBB Entry Level From Another Industry

Hello everyone,

I have been working as an entry level analyst at a hedge fund in a business development role for almost a year. The hedge fund is very well known and a name brand for anyone in finance. I do client related work in this rotational program but its not an investing role, more like investor relations and LP sales. I graduated from an Ivy with a good GPA and I interned here before so was excited to take on the job but after a year I am ready for a new challenge.

The friends in MBB I talked to all enjoy their role and I assessed that its to my liking. I also interned at a consulting firm earlier in undergrad so am familiar with the work. I am worried about how to move into a role at MBB however as I know I cannot recruit as an undergrad on the campus timelines but would like to try and secure interviews and move sometime next year.

Is my background good for MBB? Would the market for my lateral hiring be good next year?

Hi there,

  1. Without seeing your full resume, your profile should work to move past the screening stage. Make sure to score referrals from your friends before applying.
  2. Everything points towards a good 2025 market. Let's hope it materializes!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

Coming from an Ivy with good GPA does help, but it is not the only bar/criteria that firms are looking for. How well you are able to paint your story in your CV is important too.

The most effective way is to get your friends to refer your CV - this way you will at least get screened.

All the best!

Hi

Your profile seems attractive with Ivy league and top tier / equivalent brands. I might be wrong but last I checked you can still apply through grad recruitment channels within 18-24months after graduation. This might be worth checking in your local market.

Good luck!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your career trajectory thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, based on the information provided, your profile appears to be well enough. However, please bear in mind that you should perfect your application files and secure referrals before you apply.
  • Moreover, no one can make a serious assessment of what the recruiting situation in consulting will look like next year. Therefore, I would advise you to apply when you feel the time is right, as there have almost never been situations where no recruiting has been made at all.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your applications, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
