Joining as an experienced hire from the industry in Organization Structure practice

Hi all,

I have 7.5 years of financial industry experience in several roles (graduate traineeship, business management/executive assistant and the last 2 years a project management) who is now experienced in (agile) organizational transformation in data area, in project management/lead positions. I would like to join MBB in the relevant practice as an experienced hire.

What would be my chances?

What are the important points I should consider in my preps?

Is there anything specific or area-related preps an experienced hire candidate should do?

Thankful for your views and suggestions :)

Your chances of receiving an invitation depend on the companies you’ve worked for. If they are relevant, you’ll have a fair chance of being invited.

The interview process for the POP (People and Organization Practice) is the same as for other practices. You’ll need to prepare for both case interviews and the McKinsey PEI.

Feel free to reach out if you’d like assistance with the process—I’m happy to help!

Best,

Alberto

Thank you! To understand if the company I currently work for is relevant, what should I take into consideration? For clarity I work for one of the biggest asset managers in Europe which time to time is a client to MBB.

Hey!

As someone with 7.5 years of financial industry experience, including roles in project management and organizational transformation, your profile aligns well with MBB’s needs for experienced hires in their Organization Structure or Transformation practices. Having worked at both BCG and McKinsey, I’ve seen experienced hires successfully transition by highlighting their expertise in managing complexity, driving agile transformations, and leadership in cross-functional projects. Your chances largely depend on how well you position your narrative: emphasize the impact you’ve had in your roles, especially quantifiable achievements in transformations, and connect them to consulting skills like problem-solving, client management, and strategic thinking. For your preparation, focus on tailoring your story during fit interviews to showcase why you’re passionate about consulting and how your industry experience will bring unique value. On the technical side, you’ll need to excel at case interviews, so practice structured problem-solving, market sizing, and frameworks while being prepared to adapt them to transformation-related cases. Specific prep for experienced hires involves demonstrating credibility in your domain while showing openness to learning consulting methodologies. Networking can also be crucial—connect with consultants in the practice to understand the nuances and seek guidance. This targeted approach, combined with solid case prep and clear articulation of your value-add, will increase your likelihood of success.

Good luck, Alessa

Hi there,

You would need to post a bit more information about your profile for a definitive statement:

  • Employer (size, brand)
  • Career trajectory overall and leadership experience
  • University background (unis, programs, GPA, peer comparison)

Generally, 7.5 years of work experience, including team leadership, in a large organization with significant responsibility and impact could be fitting for a EM/project lead position if certain other criteria are met.

The prep is the same as for other roles, however, networking plays an important role.

Cheers,

Florian
