Hi, Manar.

If you are starting to the case interview preparation world and want to have an idea of what the interview process looks like, I suggest you watch a couple of videos on youtube – just type “case interview example” and you will find plenty.

If you are looking for a general scheme of how to open a case, please consider the 4 steps below.

  1. Listen and take bullet-point notes
  2. Summarize the context and the objective to be reached – the opposite of repeating everything you heard
  3. Ask clarifying questions – be prepared to defend the relevance to the case of your question
  4. Ask for time to lay out your structure

It is worthy to mention that the specific way to do steps 1 to 4 will totally depend on the type of case that is presented to you, since it can vary in terms of objective – e.g., new-market entry, turnaround, contract signing decision – and of industry – e.g., airline, banking, real state, oil.

In the beginning, it is recommended to learn the relevant theories of problem solving (e.g., SMART) and to get exposed to as many cases as possible ideally with feedback – from a colleague or from a coach. As you become more advanced, you will want to be presented to fewer, more complex cases, with even more thorough feedback – from a coach.

Hope it helps and wish you the best of luck

Anderson
