I want to apply to a US office but afraid to ask about relocation assistance e.g. Spouse visa

Hello

I am in London and have dual US/UK citizenship - I have a partner referral for the LA office but I am afraid to start the application process without knowing if I'd be able to relocate with my spouse. Does anyone know what relocation support is given when moving to an office further away - e.g. spouse visa help, moving costs; and would they be flexible on the offer date given I'd have a lot to arrange before I leave for the new role?

thanks

Hi there!

Many top-tier consulting firms will definitely offer relocation assistance if they want you, so no harm at all in applying (especially when you have partner referral!) You can haggle these things out with HR once you get your offer.

Regardless of what HR says or does, as a US citizen, your spouse is eligible to apply for a green card as well. Depending on her country of birth, you could get this green card fairly quickly. Ideally, of course, the company HR will help sponsor this green card (and chances are that they will), but either way, if the offer is enticing enough, probably worth the investment anyway!

Feel free to reach out with any further questions — as a recent immigrant to the US, I can help you look at your overall options.

Best of luck!

From my experience during the MBA at IESE and Berkeley, I've seen multiple candidates apply for positions in the US and this can indeed be challenging to secure a spouse visa sponsorship. However, it is perfectly okay to ask HR about it in a professional manner. Companies fully understand this questions are part of the process, and while it may be difficult to get sponsorship, asking will not hurt your chances. Good luck!

It feels like this is a deal breaker to you.

So there's no issue if you are upfront and discuss with HR before you apply.

Hi there,

This largely depends on the firm.

You will get the most accurate and direct answer by reaching out to HR of the respective firms. There is no downside in asking.

All the best,

Would this not affect my application as they might not want to hire someone with additional costs?

No impact. HR is in place for helping people out before, during and after the recuiting process. They are the main point of contact for these questions and get them every day. Also, it's the only source of reliable information for these matters...

Hi there,

This is a question you should just address with HR. Some companies will offer a relocation package, others might say that since you deliberately decided to transfer offices within the same company, it is your responsibility to take care of the logistics. You should therefore first find out what HR thinks and then you could still have a chat about it with the person who referred you to the LA office.
