I have a little more than 4 years of experience as a consultant in Canada with a fortune 50 IT consulting firm. I have covered several roles in digital transformation complex projects from working in PMO, OCM, testing, data analytics and migration, agile deliveries, etc...
I completed a bachelors degree in Economics & Psychology + a masters degree in Data Analytics (both from top 10 schools in Canada)
I am hoping to join any of the UAE offices - Which would be more appropriate for me to apply to? Associate or the Junior Associate role? and Why?
Associate or Junior Associate at Mckinsey?
Hey there,
Answering which would be "more appropriate" is quite broad, but I'll share some thoughts here...
- The performance bar: For Associates (in some instance the interview but definitely on the job), the performance bar is much higher, and even though your experience is strong - you don't have much consulting experience. McKinsey often gives less grace to Associates that progress slowly to Engagement managers than they do to Junior Associates that progress slowly to Associate. So you may want to think about if you want to buy yourself more time and longevity in the firm by getting in at Junior Associate or if you feel capable and confident to ramp up quickly as an experienced hire (and therefore go in as Associate)
- Your (long or short term) exit plans & compensation: Another consideration factor is based on how long you want to be in the Firm for. If you just want 2 years experience and then to exit from there, I'd recommend going in as Associate because you'd be better compensated for the time at the firm. This point can be extended further to just general financial optimisation, in which it's better to come in as Associate and earn more
- Potential staffing opportunities: Another consideration (whilst this is very much out of your control) is that sometimes Junior Associates may have more staffing opportunities than Associates in harder economic times because they are cheaper to staff. So from an experiential point of view, Junior Associates may be more advantageous (albeit this point is slightly debatable)
Hope these points help. I'd be happy to chat with you further on any of this. Feel free to DM me
All the best
Hi there,
With 4 years of experience, you're right in the middle of the Junior Associate and Associate leveling. If you have a strong resume (it sounds like you do, but I'd like to review it in detail with you) and feel ready to crush the fit/case portion of the interview, I would go for the Associate role and let them level you down.
The Associate role requires 4-6 years of experience or an MBA from a top-tier program. Your 4 years + Master's make you a viable candidate. This has a shorter ramp-up to Engagement Manager, so you'd need to impress them in the application and interview process to lock it in.
The best path forward would be to network with folks in the office (consultants and/or recruiting) to get their reactions to that leveling question.
Cheers,
Vini
Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on your career trajectory thus far!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- Contrary to what other coaches have said, I would advise you to apply for the Associate role if you think your qualifications match. If the recruiter thinks differently, they will inform you either at the beginning or during the interview process.
You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.
If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
Best,
Hagen
