Applying for McKinsey London or LA

Hello,

I have dual US/ UK citizenship and currently live in London. Have made contact and been given the option of a partner referral in both McKinsey London and LA  - I am keen to move to the US so thinking I should apply directly to the LA office but does anyone have any insight into what would be a better choice? Are you able to apply to two offices?

Would all interviews be remote if for the LA office?

Also, would mck help with my spouse’s visa at all?

I have about 8 years of experience including 4 years in management consulting so thinking of coming in at associate level. Thoughts on that as well?

How to Break Into MBB 101: Mastering the Interview (Ex-McKinsey EM with 5+ years of consulting interviewing experience)
  1. Office Choice: Since you’re looking to move to the US, going straight for the LA office makes a lot of sense. That said, think about where you have stronger connections and where you might fit in best. If your network and experience align more with London, it could still be worth considering. You can apply to both offices, but having a clear preference might help you stand out.
  2. Interviews: If you’re applying to the LA office, you’ll probably start with remote interviews. As you move along, they might want to meet in person, especially if you’re close to getting an offer.
  3. Spouse’s Visa: McKinsey generally offers good relocation support, including help with visas for spouses. It’s a good idea to check in with HR during your application to make sure you understand what kind of support you can expect.
  4. Associate Level: With 8 years of experience, including 4 in management consulting, aiming for an associate role sounds like a solid plan. It should let you leverage your experience while still offering room for growth. It might also be worth talking to someone at McKinsey to see if they think another level might be a better fit for you.

Overall, you’re in a great spot to make this move. Best of luck with your decision and the application process! Would love to connect and give you more context/help with interview prep, feel free to DM me!

Hi there,

  1. Given your background and motivation, I'd definitely apply for the LA office.
  2. You would usually need to state a preference and would likely be interviewed by the US office.
  3. Interviews are virtual.
  4. If they want you to relocate, visa help should be offered I believe.
  5. It depends on how much leadership experience you have. If you led significant projects and larger teams, I could see you come in at EM level.

Cheers,

Florian
