Advanced degree MBB Australia

I am interested in transitioning to consulting after several years in banking in Australia. Here's a brief summary of my background:

  • First-class honours degree in Finance from the University of Sydney, with multiple academic awards.
  • PhD in Finance from the University of Sydney, fully funded through a tuition and stipend scholarship, along with multiple academic awards.
  • Two years of professional experience as a quantitative analyst at a leading Big Four Australian bank, including a semi-leadership role in a major transformation project.

From what I've gathered, recruitment for MBB  in Australia is very different from other markets, particularly in that holding an MBA isn't considered a critical requirement. Given that strong problem-solving and analytical/quantitative skills are core components of my current role, I'm confident in these areas. However, I am uncertain about how competitive my profile would be for MBB Australia. I'd appreciate any insights or guidance regarding my fit for MBB Australia.

Hi!

In summary you have a HIGHLY competitive profile:

Your academic credentials and work experience align well with McKinsey’s (and MBBs in general) requirements for Associate positions:

  • Advanced Degree Holders: McKinsey considers candidates with advanced degrees, such as a PhD in Finance, for Associate roles.
  • Professional Experience: Your two years as a quantitative analyst at a leading Australian bank ( including a semi-leadership role in a major transformation project ) demonstrate the analytical and leadership skills valued by any MBB firm.

To clarify some of the points you raised:

“Recruitment for MBB in Australia is very different from other markets, particularly in that holding an MBA isn't considered a critical requirement.”

  • Recruitment processes at McKinsey , and I’m sure the same applies across all MBBs , are generally global in nature. For example, I was interviewed by individuals from the US, Germany, and South Africa.
  • There is a global standard to uphold, so the practices tend to be consistent across offices (although timing, or local recruiting policies etc. might be different)

To enhance your application, I’d suggest the following:

  • CV Prep: Update your CV to focus on quantifiable achievements and career progression. Highlight your academic background, analytical strengths, and leadership experience. Make sure it’s concise, clear, and emphasizes problem-solving and impact.
  • Leverage Referrals: If possible, secure internal referrals! They can significantly strengthen your application. Try even cold Linkedin messaging people. Get to know people. Reach out. You never know what happens. Maybe an old school mate works at an MBB , now is the time to hit them up.
  • Networking: Engage with MBB local recruiting events and initiatives to learn more about the firms and build connections. Also, consider tapping into your school or company alumni network , anyone you know who’s gone through the MBB process could be a valuable resource. (like that school friend).
  • Case and Interview Prep: Familiarize yourself with the MBB interview process, which typically includes case studies and personal experience interviews.

Super happy to help you with your case prep :) feel free to DM me! :)

Hi there,

You academic results are very impressive and highly qualified for MBB in Australia. You don't necessary need an MBA.

What you'd need is ideally to get referral into the MBB firms, make sure your resume is well polished, and prepare well for interviews.

Good luck and feel free to DM if you need help.

Best,

Emily

Hi there,

1) From what I've gathered, recruitment for MBB  in Australia is very different from other markets, particularly in that holding an MBA isn't considered a critical requirement.

If you have a PhD, you don’t normally need an MBA, this applies worldwide at MBB.

2) I am uncertain about how competitive my profile would be for MBB Australia

From what you shared, your profile looks like a good fit. I would recommend reviewing the requirements for CV, cover and referrals at the link below to maximize your chances:

BCG Principal, 150+ BCG interviews (incl. final rounds), Post-MBA offers from All Big 3 / MBB

Hi there.

You have a very compelling profile for MBB.

I worked in banking in Canada after MBB and can tell you that MBB is very much looking to hire folks with your experience.

MBA is 100% optional.

Advice I would have for you to maximize your chances:

1. Make sure you capture your compelling experience well on your resume

2. Network with MBB folks to ideally get a referral vs. a "cold" application

3. Put in the time to prepare for interviews (esp. the case interview part)

Feel free to reach out if I can be of any help!

Best of luck!

-Andreas

Senior Manager with 10 years of consulting experience and leads recruitment (grad - manager hires). Free 10 mins intro.

Hi there, having studied and recruited for consulting in Berkeley and also worked in Sydney for the last 10 years, I agree that the MBB recruitment approach here in Australia is different to the state - and you are right MBA might not be as necessary here in Australia as supposed to the states.

The consulting industry here in Australia is a lot more based on transferrable skillset - strategic thinking, succinct and structured communication etc and the frameworks - can all learn on the project - at least this is what I have looked for when hiring into the consulting firms.

With your FS background, a lot of big 4 especially EY FSO consulting attractive - the question is now do you want to break into consulting or MBB specifically :)

Happy to chat further!

You look like a great fit. With a well written CV I don't see why you wouldn't be invited to interview.

Feel free to reach out if you want to review your CV and make sure it is structured / written in a way that maximizes your chances.

Hi there,

In short, you have a great profile and should apply ASAP.

Before that, I would try to score a referral for the different firms, polish your application documents, then get cracking on test prep and case interview prep.

Cheers,

Florian
