Keep reading to find out how you can secure your spot at Evercore!

Overview of Evercore

Evercore is one of the most prestigious elite boutique investment banks. It was founded in 1995, and now operates as an independent investment banking advisory firm. This means it does not engage in some of the trading or lending activities that larger, full-service banks typically do.

The main business areas at Evercore are investment banking, equities, and wealth management. The equities division, Evercore ISI, performs equity research, sales, and agency trades execution while the wealth management team offers services to high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and endowments.

What Is the Recruiting Process at Evercore Like?

The Evercore recruitment process is similar to that of most investment banks. It includes application submission, online assessments, phone or video interviews, and a superday. Here’s what you can expect at each stage.

1. Initial Application

Evercore is big on campus recruitment. However, they also have opportunities that you can access online. Once you find a fitting opportunity, you’ll create an account on their recruitment platform and submit your resume, cover letter, and other personal details.

It pays to customize your CV because you are only allowed to submit up to two applications each year for different positions or locations.

2. Online Assessments

If you pass the resume screening, you may be invited to take online assessments. These are mostly aptitude tests that evaluate your mental ability, mathematics and analytical skills. It’s another screening stage that investment banks use to filter out candidates. So, it’s important to give it your best.

3. Phone Interview/ Video Interview

The first round of interviews at Evercore usually consists of a phone interview that assesses both technical skills and cultural fit. It can be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Some candidates in the past have experienced up to three phone interviews.

You may also get a video interview which mostly focuses on finance and accounting questions.

4. Superday

The phone or video interviews are followed by an in-person second round called superday. This is the last step in the interview process, and the bank only invites those who have the skills and potential fit based on the assessments of the previous stages.

During the superday, expect back-to-back interviews with different team members like analysts, associates, and senior investment bankers. Some candidates report up to five back-to-back 30 minute interviews. The stage is heavy on technicals, interpersonal skills, and cultural fit. So, prepare well since it determines whether you get the offer.

What Is the Timeline of the Recruiting Process at Evercore?

The recruitment process at Evercore usually takes one to three months from initial application to job offer. The results for the most qualified candidates can come out within a week, but may take longer sometimes.

What Can You Expect in the Interviews?

During Evercore investment banking interviews, you should expect both behavioral and technical questions. The behaviorals assess several areas like cultural fit, work ethics, past experiences, problem solving skills, motivations, and interests. Some of the sample questions for this category include:

  • Why IB or why Evercore?
  • Did you get a return offer from the IB firm you did an internship at?
  • What do you know about Evercore?
  • Which other firms are you interviewing at?

👉 Practice more fit questions with our Stress Question Mode.

The technical questions test your knowledge of finance, accounting, and valuation methods. Here are some sample technical questions at Evercore:

  • How do you calculate P/E ratio?
  • If I was in a situation where I could only look at two financial statements to evaluate a firm’s prospects, which ones would I use and why?
  • Is it possible to have negative shareholders’ equity?  What does it mean?
  • With an example, can you demonstrate the difference between LIFO and FIFO?
  • What’s the purpose of valuation?

How Can You Prepare for the Interviews?

If you want to succeed in Evercore's competitive interview process and land a position at this prestigious investment banking firm, thorough preparation is a non-negotiable. To navigate the interview process confidently and effectively, focus on these three proven preparation methods: self-study, mock interviews, and interview coaching.

Self-Study

Start with dedicated self-study as the foundation of your Evercore interview preparation. Use this time to develop comprehensive knowledge of both the firm and essential technical skills. Get to know everything you can about Evercore, including their business areas, recent high-profile deals, company culture, and core values. Pay special attention to their strengths in M&A, restructuring, and their sector specializations.

Take time to also master technical concepts for investment banking roles, including valuation methodologies (DCF, LBO, comparables), accounting principles, financial statement analysis, and merger modeling. Evercore is known for being heavy on the technicals, so prepare thoroughly. Staying current on market trends, recent significant transactions, and economic factors influencing the investment banking space is also wise as Evercore interviewers often assess market awareness.

Take some time to also prepare for behavioral questions by reflecting on your experiences that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. Structure your responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to provide clear, compelling answers.

Mock Interviews

Once you've built a solid knowledge foundation through self-study, mock interviews give you a platform to practice and receive feedback. You’ll need to first identify appropriate practice partners including peers in finance programs, mentors, university career advisors, or finance professionals in your network.

Then structure sessions to mirror Evercore's actual interview format, including both technical and behavioral components. The sessions typically last 30-45 minutes. Your interviewer should provide specific, honest feedback on your responses, technical accuracy, communication style, and overall presentation.

You can also record your mock sessions when possible to review your performance, identify patterns in your responses, and note areas for improvement.

👉 Find like-minded peers to practice with anytime on our Meeting Board.

Hire an Interview Coach

Once you have theoretical knowledge and have managed to do mock interviews, it’s advisable to work with an interview coach. Ideally, you should seek coaches with investment banking backgrounds who understand Evercore's specific recruitment processes and organizational culture. This way, they can provide insider perspectives unavailable elsewhere.

Working with an expert interview coach can increase your chances of acing the interview process and landing a job offer at Evercore for several reasons. Coaches give you an expert evaluation of your technical knowledge, response delivery, and non-verbal communication that might not be caught during peer mock interviews.

They can also give you personalized strategies to address your unique challenges and take advantage of your individual strengths to stand out among other candidates. Another area they may help with is developing concise, compelling narratives about your experience and motivation that resonate with Evercore's culture of excellence and client focus.

Best part is that the interview skills developed with a professional coach extend beyond your immediate Evercore interviews. They provide value throughout your finance career progression.
