How can I improve my performance and stand out?

I'm not sure if this is the right place because most of the questions are about everything before the job and the preparation, but I'm still hoping for your expertise: I've been with a company for two years and I'm feeling more and more pressure because things are going rather badly at the moment. I would like to stand out and improve my performance. Do you have any tips on how I can do this?

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the pressure at your company!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, begin by thoroughly assessing your current situation. Identify the key areas where your performance is currently lacking and understand the expectations of your role. This self-assessment will provide a clear starting point for improvement.
  • Moreover, actively seek feedback from your peers and supervisors. This can involve informal discussions or structured feedback sessions. Use the insights gained to pinpoint specific areas for development and align your efforts with the company’s goals.
  • Lastly, implement a plan based on the feedback. Prioritize the areas that need improvement and set measurable targets. Regularly review your progress against these targets and adjust your approach as necessary to ensure continuous improvement.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

to answer how you can improve your performance, especially if you feel that it's been lagging, one would really need to understand what is causing things to go “really bad at the moment”.

More often than not it is a motivation issue. Your work could simply be not aligned anymore your objectives.

It can also be that the expectations from you have risen as your tenure increased, and you simply did not have the chance or know-how to improve.

But as others have said, I would really start by trying to understand what seems to be the issue. In order to do this:

  1. Do your own reflection of what is not going well in your performance
  2. Ask for feedback from people that have worked with you
  3. Piece the info together and spot the patterns, then prioritize on which ones you would like to work first (which ones could make the highest impact on your performance?)
  4. Translate that into a plan you can act on - it essentially needs to say what would you do differently, in which context, and how?
  5. Overall, continue to be honest with yourself and re-asses the situation.

There is of course a lot more specific advice to share, but that would depend so much on the source of the issue. I think it's the right step to reach out and ask for help, continue to do this and I'm sure you will be able to figure it out!

Best of luck,

Ariadna

Hi there,

Without more details this is very hard to diagnose and help with.

A few pointers:

1. Work on it yourself

Might take a while and can be a painful process but engage in an honest reflection on what's going wrong and why. Find out what areas you need to improve and then devise a plan (daily, weekly, monthly) to get better with clear, actionable goals. Engage other people in your surroundings for feedback.

2. Get a book

This is an extension of the first point. I wrote a book called Consulting Career Secrets where I discuss how to perform well in top-tier jobs across all categories. You could use this to further your insights.

3. Engage a coach

Get a career coach and a truly objective outside position on your situation as well as a tailored progress plan to move on. Happy to help!

Cheers,

Florian

You are in the right place. I also work with people who are already in consulting or other corporate environments (some former candidates whom I helped when applying for jobs).

Do reach out and tell me more about your situation. It's virtually impossible to give you any useful advice aside from some general tips with the granularity that I currently have.

You could read though these two article I wrote about performing well when just starting in consulting and maybe there are a few ideas you can already pick from there:

Cristian

Hi,

Valid question. I suggest you download the Fishbowl app - Fishbowl is a great place for these (and other) questions once you have joined a company.

Compared to interview prep, the areas of improvement in on-the-job performance are much more complex and personalized.

They can range from a weak consulting toolkit, poor case leadership, general panic, and all the way to harsh reviews.

Feel free to write to me and we can discuss what is the right approach for you.

“I would like to stand out and improve my performance. Do you have any tips on how I can do this?”

  1. Talk to your manager / seniors
  2. Ask for honest, actionable feedback
  3. Work on their suggestions
  4. If you have doubts on how to work on that feedback, book a coaching session with a seasoned coach (one that was manager or above at a consulting firm).
