No BS, Evidence-Based System to Get MBB Offers
Important! This article may challenge your current understanding of how to prepare for consulting interviews. Many coaches and authors heavily promote ideas like “learn to think like a consultant,” but if you look at this critically, that approach doesn’t hold up.
Here’s the hard truth: 98.5% of candidates are reading the same free prep books, solving random cases from casebooks, and trying to “think like a consultant,” yet they still face rejection.
I’m a strong believer in creating a clear system, not just vague advice like “think like a consultant” or “improve your business sense.”
Imagine if, instead of teaching you the specific skills to solve equations, someone told you to "think like a mathematician." Or, if pilots were trained to "think like a pilot" rather than being taught the actual skills to fly. What if doctors were taught to "think like a doctor" instead of precise medical techniques?
WITHOUT A CLEAR SYSTEM, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO MASTER A NEW SKILL OR PROFESSION.
So, why do many coaches and authors try to teach you to “think like a consultant”? Because it sounds great from a marketing perspective, and creating such an educational product is far easier than building a detailed, step-by-step system. It’s simpler! But the results are disappointing. As I mentioned, 98.5% of people get rejected—most of them falling victim to this marketing.
Why a System Is Crucial
- Tangible Goals: Rather than having an abstract goal like “learn to think like a consultant,” you get concrete, actionable tasks. Our brains work better with clear, structured tasks broken down into micro-steps.
- Memorization Becomes Easier: While you’re building your case-solving skills, having a clear system ensures that you always know what to do and when to do it. It’s similar to learning to drive—you’re taught specific skills, not just “think like a driver.”
- Trackable Progress: With a system, you always know where you stand. What’s easier to track—“I need to learn three more case types” or “I need to think more like a consultant”? A clear system gives you measurable, predictable goals.
- Focused Feedback: You can identify the exact case types or areas where you need to improve, allowing you to focus your efforts and improve faster.
What Do I Mean by a System to Get an MBB Offer?
Here’s what a real system looks like:
1. Networking: Your goal is to maximize interview invites. Here’s how:
- Build a killer one-page CV and cover letter.
- Optimize your LinkedIn profile.
- Set up a LinkedIn networking funnel with scripts for outreach.
- Use a system to track every interaction.
This will give you a 10% conversion rate from cold messages to referrals. Track all activities in Google Sheets.
2. Case Preparation:
- Master the foundational skills for solving cases—asking clarifying questions, structuring problems, analyzing graphs and math problems, and providing recommendations.
- Learn the theory and practice behind the 15 core case types: - P&L, market sizing (five types), market entry, growth, capacity expansion, pricing, M&A, public sector, and other non-standard strategy cases.
- Gain basic knowledge about key industries (17+), including oil & gas, banking, retail, and more.
- Get quality feedback on your case solutions to identify areas for improvement.
3. Fit Stories: You need to prepare fit interview stories that are based on specific MBB criteria. This means crafting and tailoring your stories to show off key consulting skills in a way that matches what MBB firms are looking for.
4. Mindset – Implement techniques to reduce stress and the pressure of the interview. Eliminate procrastination and laziness, so that when you walk into the interview, you perform at your absolute best.
If you’re tired of wasting time on vague advice and want a proven system that works, this is your chance to break away from the average. Don’t fall into the trap that most candidates do—relying on general advice, random case books, and generic coaching.
With a structured approach, your preparation becomes targeted, measurable, and effective. You’ll know exactly what to do, how to improve, and what steps are left before you can confidently walk into any MBB interview and stand out.
