Case Interviews in Finance

Are case interviews also used in finance and can I use the same materials as for the interviews in consulting?

My last interview was also called a case interview and was one in the sense that I was presented with a business situation and had to make suggestions for action based on this information.

I can't say for sure whether case interviews in consulting and finance are identical and whether you can use the same preparation materials. However, very number-based cases should be a good exercise in any case, at least for the start of the preparation.

Short answer: Yes, case interviews are also used in finance, especially in areas like investment banking, private equity, and asset management.

However, they tend to be more focused on financial modeling and market-sizing than the broader strategy cases in consulting. While consulting case prep materials can be useful, you should tailor your approach to finance-specific cases, emphasizing valuation, M&A scenarios, and industry trends.

Hey there,

Yes, finance roles - especially in IB, PE, and asset management - do use case interviews, but they’re usually more finance-heavy than consulting cases. Expect a focus on financial modeling, valuation, and M&A scenarios rather than broad strategy.

Consulting prep can help with structured thinking, but I’d also recommend practicing DCF, LBO models, and market sizing with a finance lens. If you’re comfortable with numbers and can break down deals logically, you’ll be good to go.

Happy to help if you need guidance!

Yes, I had a case interview for a finance role where they gave me a short M&A scenario and asked whether the deal made strategic and financial sense. It wasn’t as structured as a consulting case, but the thinking was similar. I actually used some of the same PrepLounge materials to prep and they helped a lot.

Yes, case interviews are also used in finance, especially for roles in investment banking, private equity, or asset management. The structure of the case interview can be similar to those in consulting, but there are some key differences in focus.

In my own finance interview, the focus was more on finance-specific topics, like analyzing financial statements, valuing companies, or looking at market trends. For example, I had to think through scenarios related to mergers and acquisitions or perform a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, which might not be as common in consulting interviews.

The materials you use for consulting case studies can still help, especially for learning how to approach problems in a structured way. However, I’d recommend also practicing finance-specific cases and making sure you're comfortable with financial models, valuation methods, and market analysis to be well-prepared. Hope this helps!
