McKinsey R1. First interview I was a bit nervous and while trying to structure the math, I was given the answers by the Interviewer and walked through it. I finished the case keeping my composure.
Second interview was great and no nerves were there. Strong all the way through. I'm worried I may have screwed up in the first interview though. Will the performance in my second interview help make a case for me to move forward?
Will I make it to Round 2?
Hi,ย
While there are no guarantees, having the interviewer assist you during a case interview isn't necessarily a disqualifier. Interviewers may sometimes provide hints or guidance to evaluate how well you can build on their input and adjust your approach. What's most important is how you respond to the assistance: demonstrate your problem-solving skills, clear communication, logical thinking, and ability to integrate feedback. They are also considering if you demonstrate qualities that align with the firm's values and culture?
Just remember to review and practice for future rounds to refine your skills further. Happy to assisst during a personal coaching session. Good luck!

Impossible to give you a definitive answer, but donโt take the interviewerโs action as a statement that youโre done/didnโt pass. They couldโve noticed you clearly struggled and threw you a freebie.ย
Itโs not ideal to completely miss the mark on an important analysis on the case. ย You ability to move forward really depends on how strongly the other case went and how well you recovered from that pointโฆย
- Did you act gracefully, take the results, and continued to drive towards insights and additional analysis needed?
- Did you ask thoughtful follow ups and arrive at the implications of the analysis to the customer? ย
Hello there!
Being in this position is tough, I know. Unfortunately, itโs difficult to determine if your performance in one interview will impact your chances after a strong second interview. However, based on both rounds, you may still be given the opportunity to advance to a third round or even pass through to the final stage. Ultimately, it depends on how significant the mistakes were, how well you performed in the second and the interviewersโ perspectives. In my experience, interviewers might let small mistakes slide if the case was overall well done, but this varies depending on the severity of the error and their own evaluation. It was a good thing you kept your posture, an interview is a mock of a conversation between you and your manager/partner or a client โ sometimes consultants make mistakes and have to still convey trust, so well done on that.
Structuring the math was also a challenge for me once, until I internalized a fool-proof approach. Let me know if I can assist you with thatโIโd be happy to help.ย
Wishing you the best of luck in your interview process and keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Best, ย
Mari
Hey there,ย
It's not really possible for anyone to tell you if you will move forward as we can't really ascertain the true level of your two performances. But I will share some general principles on this
For you to move forward to the next round, generally the two interviewers need to both agree and give you a pass. If your performance in one didn't meet the bar whilst the other did, then generally that tends to mean the end of the journey. However, it is possible (in this example) to get a 3rd interview if they feel that you have potential and are not able to distinctively make a yes or no recommendation on your case
So the extent to which one interviewer influences the other really depends on how well and how not-so-well you did in each interview
Regardless, wishing you all the best
We don't know. You'll find out when you find out.
That said, never hinge on 1 company (if you can help it).
Always, always, always, keep recruiting until you have an offer in hand.
Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- First of all, no one can seriously answer the question of whether or not you will make it to the final interview round. Only you and your interviewers have experienced your performance, so unfortunately you'll have to wait and see.
- Moreover, I would highly advise you to apply to other consulting firms, if you haven't already, to maximize your chances of getting at least one offer.
