What would Math Test looks like for 1st phase of interview?

Hey everyone,

Just scored an interview for a math test (phase 1!) this Thursday on Zoom at a new boutique consulting firm.

Any idea what kind of math they might throw at me? General stuff, business-related math, or a mix?

Honestly, I'm brushing up on my math skills right now, and it's not exactly my jam. Any advice on how to best prepare for this test? Should I focus on building a strong foundation first, or jump into common business math?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, I would advise you to practice basic mathematics, such as percentages, ratios, and simple algebra.
  • Moreover, within that practice, you may want to focus on business-related math such as break-even analysis, profit calculations, and simple financial modeling.
  • Lastly, practice with timed math drills to enhance your speed and accuracy under pressure, which mirrors the actual test conditions.

You can find more on this topic here: Speed reading techniques.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming pre-interview assessment and interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

If you add the firm to your question, then it is easier to help you out.

Some firms use full case tests like most BCG offices with the Casey.

Other firms or offices use more GMAT quant-reasoning type of questions mixed with some business math (e.g., Bain with the SOVA, Oliver Wyman, Kearney, some BCG offices with the Cognitive Test, etc…)

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Q: Any idea what kind of math they might throw at me? General stuff, business-related math, or a mix?

Tests vary substantially depending on the firm. In your case, I would recommend reaching out to HR and asking them if they have any examples so that you can understand how to prepare. If that doesn’t work, you can also post the name of the firm in the Q&A, possibly, someone might help you understand the type of preparation needed.

If nothing works, you might want to consider the following types of tests for holistic preparation:

  • GMAT
  • SHL
  • Old McKinsey PST

Good luck!

I would bet on business math.

I suggest doing math cases, and the kind of math problem one gets on a GMAT test. Using preparation material for other consulting firms online tests can be useful as well).
