Typical case topics with Oliver Wyman - internship position in Doha.

Hello,

I have a case interview for an internship with Oliver Wyman in Qatar.
What type of cases should I prioritise, knowing that the Interviewer's (Associate) background within the company is Strategy?

P.S.: 3 weeks ago, I participated in a 2-day event with OW in Doha, where the purpose was to get to know the applicants better. When I talked to the Head of the office, he showed great interest in my profile and background.

Hey there,

It's difficult to say what "typical" is, as interview case preferences vary. But in general, some topics to prepare for definitely would be around:

  • Market sizing and estimations
  • Profitability analysis (including revenue growth, pricing and cost optimizations)
  • Market entry and M&A (including product launches)
  • Public sector strategies (especially in Middle East region)
  • Operations cases (including manufacturing, optimizations, digital adoption)

What is crucial here is to develop your 1st principles way of thinking about approach to problem solving, so you make yourself adaptable to a wide range of possible case questions and not be limited to only what may be "typical".

All the best

I coached three people who secured offers at Oliver Wyman in Doha.

They encountered a variety of case types and industries, including M&A in pharma, profitability of a global transportation company, and market expansion for a bank, among others.

My suggestion is to focus on case fundamentals: building a strong framework, interpreting charts, working on math, communicating top-down, brainstorming, and other key skills to tackle any case effectively.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there,

Congratulations on securing a case interview with Oliver Wyman! Given that your interviewer has a background in Strategy, I would suggest you double-down on cases related to market entry (e.g., whether a company should enter a new market; you'll need to consider market size, competition, entry barriers, and potential profitability), growth strategy (strategies for a company to grow, whether through new products, market expansion, or increasing market share), profitability analysis (e.g., identifying the reasons behind a company's declining profits and recommending solutions to improve profitability), M&A (evaluating the strategic fit and potential synergies of an M&A), competitive response (e.g., developing strategies for a company to respond to competitive threats or changes in the market).

Additionally, make sure to:

  • Clearly outline your approach to solving the case.
  • Ask clarifying questions, as this shows your analytical thinking and ensures you fully understand the problem
  • Communicate your insights on an ongoing basis;  be concise and articulate in presenting your findings and recommendations

Given your recent participation at the event in Doha, you already have a good understanding of the firm's culture and expectations. Use this to your advantage especially in behavioral interview part :)

Good luck with your interview, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions! Would be happy to support you in your final prep
