Should I reapply to MBB - London, UK?

Hello,

I applied to McKinsey and BCG for their summer internships last year and want to reapply. McKinsey has a 12-month ban; if I applied on January 17th last year and this year's deadline is January 18th, would I be eligible if I applied on the 18th?

For BCG, I heard about a 12-month ban. If I applied on January 23rd last year and this year's deadline is January 27th, can I apply after the 23rd to surpass the ban?

I heard BCG allows only 2 applications, and if rejected twice, you're not considered again. As in if I got rejected again this year, that’s the end of my BCG journey and I won’t be able to reapply for their grad scheme or future positions as a consultant with BCG. Is this true for all firms?

I've tried contacting recruitment without success. I’ve emailed and messaged. I don’t meet McKinsey's A-level requirement and believe this might be a factor as to why I haven’t been receiving responses. They stated last year that If I feel that despite not meeting the minimal grade criteria my application is still strong, do not hesitate to apply for the Business Analyst role.

Bain's internships are not in London; I'm waiting for their graduate scheme. Is it worth applying to McKinsey, and should I be concerned about potential bans from BCG?

Thanks.

Hi there,

1) If I applied on January 17th last year and this year's deadline is January 18th, would I be eligible if I applied on the 18th?

Usually, the ban applies from when you are rejected, not from when you apply. On the other hand,

  1. If the position you are applying for is different, you could be considered anyway.
  2. In case you have to wait one year anyway if you don’t apply now, you might as well apply.

If you have an internal contact, I would recommend applying through them as a referral, to increase your chances. For McKinsey you probably won't have enough time, but for BCG, you can check the following for some tips:

▶ How to Get an MBB Referral

2) I heard BCG allows only 2 applications, and if rejected twice, you're not considered again.

I have not heard of this before. Not sure if it might be something true for a specific country.

Good luck!

Francesco

I ended up not applying as the deadline was yesterday and thought it’s best I go in prepared and send in an application when I’m fully confident with myself. I didn’t think referrals mattered in the U.K.? That’s what I heard from someone at Bain. But I may have someone at BCG that will refer me. Ah ok. I’ll consider applying to BCG and see what happens. My CV is a lot better than last year when I had applied.

Hi there, in general I would recommend having a referral regardless of the location as the effect can just be positive, so if you already have one for BCG, I would leverage it. Good luck!

These ‘freeze’ periods are not calculated as an exact 365-day period.

So if you have ‘around’ one year since you were rejected, then feel free to apply.

Also, I am not aware of a ‘three strikes and you’re out forever' policy on the application process for BCG. This is literally the first time I've heard about it.

Instead, aim to build an application that is diversified that you build well your personal narrative. Sharing here a resource that you might find helpful:

Good luck!

Thank you! Do you think I should still apply if I don’t meet the A Level requirements? My CV is considerably better this year than last year as I have a big name internship on my CV, university leadership roles, consulting projects, and outside extracurriculars that are largely leadership positions but also just interesting hobbies. My experience I think is great and I go to a top 10 UK uni (not a target) but my A Level grades are holding me back. Oh right ok. I’m worried that’s the case with BCG

I would recommend that you have, first of all, a well-written CV and cover letter. These can compensate significantly for poor grades. Referrals also help a lot, as well as applying broadly. It is possible that certain firms may screen you out based on grades, but I expect this to be the exception rather than the rule.

Hi there,

Please don't measure this in days (365).

Do you have a referral?

Have you networked extensively?

Have they explicitly told you they are ready for your application and would like you to apply?

If not, don't re-apply yet! Make sure you've got a killer resume and have contacts at the firm that are willing to bat for you.

Then, apply when it makes sense for your individual situation (read: NOT at a very exact/arbitrary date).

I may have one referral but I heard in London and Europe in general that referrals don’t take you anywhere like it does in the US. A referral I’m receiving for Bain told me they only get updated on the application status but that is it. Networking I heard doesn’t matter? Application rejects also don’t receive emails that they’re ready for people’s application in the U.K. Unless you get rejected in the final round, in which case you may be told to reapply and keep in contact, there’s really no other updates from them. I’ve had friends from Oxbridge unis apply and get rejected in final round and just before final round but never received anything else from them. So I’m not sure if the process is different in the U.K.?

Networking DOES. Matter. I’ve actually done research on this and looked at the data. Networking is the #1 controllable indicator of success. In the data I looked at, networking effectively led to an 80% chance of getting the interview while not networking resulted in a 20% chance. This is a quick Q&A so I’ll leave out the details, but please be careful with all the rumors you hear from peers (they’re often wrong on most things case/interview related…it’s why us case coaches exist!)

Hi there,

if you got a 12-month ban and now 12 months have passed, then you should be cleared from that perspective. Ideally I would confirm with a recruiter that this is the case, but seemingly they did not respond to your inquiry on time.

So if you don't apply by the deadlines, your application won't be considered and you definitely won't get an internship. If you do apply, you might get invited to the interviews and you might get an internship offer. So there is more upside here. Whether your CV is overall good enough, I can't assess with the information provided. Grades are an important factor of course, but only one of an array of multiple factors that make a strong application.

So if you feel like your CV has seen some impactful additions relevant to consultant compared to last time you applied, then you should go for it.

I have also not heard of a maximum number of eligible applications for a firm. The ban period makes it sufficiently unattractive to keep applying over and over again while also trying to move on with your career and life, but in theory it is not impossible. Aside from that, the internship application process is usually separate from the full-time role application process. So even ban-periods might not directly transfer here - but that is something better to be confirmed with the local office you want to apply to.

Best of luck

Thank you! Yes McKinsey didn’t respond and it is now passed the deadline. BCG has just over a week to go and may have a referral. But heard in the UK referrals don’t matter. I didn’t apply to McKinsey. Deadline was yesterday and was tempted to but I thought I’ll apply when the timing is better for their grad scheme.

Hi there,

Instead of worrying about the exact dates it's much more important to network and score referrals as they can

  • significantly improve your chances of being reconsidered
  • shorten the ban period
  • provide you with information about current hiring trends

On top of that, you should only re-apply if you can demonstrate significant progress in 2 of the 4 dimensions of your CV:

  • Academic excellence
  • Work experience
  • Time spent abroad
  • Extracurricular activities

You have to demonstrate that you had enough time to develop and that you used this time effectively!

All the best,

Florian

Thank you! Do you think I should still apply if I don’t meet the A Level requirements? I’ve also heard that in the U.K., referrals don’t work as much. I’m being referred for Bain and the only thing that they’ll do is keep the person referring me updated on my application. Do you know if the BCG ban is true that people can only apply a maximum of two times and after that, they cannot apply again?
