Seeking Tips on Effective Networking

Dear PrepLounge Community,

I hope this message finds you well.

I have two years of experience in auditing with one of the Big4 companies. This year, I am excited to be starting my Master's degree in Germany.

As I prepare to take this next step in my career, I am eager to enhance my networking skills. I would greatly appreciate any advice or tips you could share on how to network more effectively.

Specifically, I am interested in:

  • How to approach and connect with mentors and coaches.
  • What are the most insightful questions to ask during these interactions?
  • Any personal tips or strategies that have worked well for you in making meaningful connections?

Your insights and experiences would be invaluable to me as I navigate this new chapter. Lastly, I am planning to start my career at MBB or another consulting company.

In addition, I am currently following and sending connection requests through LinkedIn to recruiters and consultants, but after they accept, I want to ensure that my interactions are meaningful and that my questions are answered.

Thank you very much in advance. I really appreciate your support and advice.

Best regards,

Hi There,

1) Simply reach out. Don't overthink the process. You can do that directly via events, via LinkedIn (current connections, introductions via common 3rd parties or cold outreach).

2) This is something you should answer for yourself. The most insightful questions are the ones that provide value for you at the moment of the interaction. Don't fall into the trap of asking “smart-sounding” questions just for the sake of it.

3) Talk to as many people as possible. Attend as many recruiting events and interviews as possible. This will give you a good impression of how the different firms work and how the consultants interact with each other. Observing this was the baseline for my decision about where to work.

All the best,

Florian
