Role models known for exceptional speaking skills?

Hi all, I’m looking for materials to practice presenting and speaking like a consultant. I’ve explored some investment banking content, but their communication style seems different—more serious and numbers-focused. Are there any famous CEOs or senior consultants known for being great communicators that could serve as role models? If you could share any names or links to speeches (movies, YouTube, etc.), that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Check out the following: Dominic Barton (former McKinsey), Julie Sweet (Accenture CEO), and James Coulter (TPG Capital) are excellent examples of clear, impactful communication in consulting. Outside the field, Sheryl Sandberg (Meta) and Jeff Weiner (LinkedIn) are known for blending data with storytelling.

If you're looking to improve your speaking skills for keynote speeches, I recommend checking out TED Talks.

If you'd like more personalized practice, feel free to reach out! In addition to case coaching, I conduct workshops on storytelling and presentation skills for companies like BMW.

Have a great day, and best of luck with your practice!

Hi there,

If you want to dive deeper into consulting communication, I can recommend The Pyramid Principle by Barbara Minto or my own book Consulting Career Secrets.

For videos, it's a bit trickier to find something that matches your request since public speaking and speeches you will find on YouTube are often very different to the communication you would find in let's say a McKinsey team room or SteerCo presentation due to the different audience, context and purpose.

As a start, you could look at Jim Collins and Tom Peters.

Cheers,

Florian

Hey there!
If you're looking to practice presenting and speaking like a consultant, in my opinion, a great role model to consider is Simon Sinek. Though not a consultant himself, his structured communication style, ability to simplify complex ideas, and strong focus on leadership are all qualities that resonate well with consulting. His famous "Start With Why" TED Talk is an excellent example of clear, engaging storytelling that consultants often use to convey their messages effectively.

If you’d like more tailored advice on presenting like a consultant or tips for breaking into MBB, feel free to reach out! I’ve mentored and coached many people on these topics and would be happy to help.

Best, Alessa :)

Look up Jim Donovan presentations on youtube. Speaking skill is not just about vocabulary, but pacing, presence and competency in the subject matter topic. The last point being exceptionally important because once you gain confidence in your knowledge, typically the previous two, with decent mental practice, will come naturally.

Lastly, speaking well is a crafted skill. Every Senior Partner I knew has made concerted efforts in practicing, be it in their earlier tenure, or even right before a steerco. e.g., I've seen Senior Partners practice their presentation in a private room 15min before a presentation. If they are doing it, so should you!
