Referral only for getting interview?

Hi guys,

Quick questions about the benefits of referrals:

[1] Are referrals only for increasing your chances of getting an interview? Or would interviewers take referrals into account in the selection process as well?

[2] Are there any other potential benefits of referrals?

Thanks!

Hi there,

  1. Only relevant for screening; once you move to the interviews, everyone starts from scratch. Interviewers are not even aware of referrals
  2. No, but the networking that goes into referrals can be helpful to learn more about the firm, people, and culture and you also get some insights into the current hiring demand/the best time to apply

Cheers,

Florian

It is only relevant to improve chances of getting an interview, nothing else.

Hi there,

1) Are referrals only for increasing your chances of getting an interview?

A referral should help only with getting the interview and not with any of the subsequent steps.

2) Are there any other potential benefits of referrals?

For the applicant, there are no other benefits besides being selected for the next step of the application process. Depending on the firm, the person referring you might get a bonus if you are hired.

Good luck!

Hello - referrals will only improve your chances of getting past the initial screening before the first test / first round interviews. After that point, your performance is what counts.

Although there are no additional benefits to referrals, conversations with your referrer could provide more insights on the firm or specific office that you can leverage in your fit interviews or questions to the interviewer.

Hi there,

I wanted to share some insights about the application process. While referrals can improve your chances of having your profile reviewed by a real person, they aren’t a guarantee for moving to the interview stage. I've seen strong candidates with referrals not make it, while others without referrals have successfully progressed. The automated screening systems these days are quite advanced and often identify top talent effectively.

I've landed interviews with all 3 MBBs and top tech firms like Google, Salesforce and Meta - all without a referral. It is key to understand what hiring managers are looking for and how you can tailor your profile to fit that requirement.

So, what can you do to enhance your application?

  1. Refine Your CV: Make sure to follow my recommended CV structure to highlight your strengths clearly.
  2. Craft a Compelling Cover Letter: Use this opportunity to showcase what you bring to the table and express your genuine enthusiasm for the firm.
  3. Familiarize Yourself with Virtual Assessments: While these assessments aren’t the sole deciding factor, scoring well can significantly bolster your chances of landing an interview.

I hope you find these tips helpful! If you have any further questions or would like assistance with your cover letter or CV, feel free to DM me.

Best regards,
Laura
