Hey,
I have a lot of stories in my mind that feel quite uncomfortable to tell because I would have to engineer them hard to make them sound interesting (i.e. group work, difficulty with one person, I managed to resolve it). I am not particular keen on telling those, I feel fake and phonie doing so.
I have another story with which I am not sure if it fits into what McK sees as leadership but which I am really proud of:
- few years ago at a summer job pre University I was working in a (really diverse!) team, and one of my colleauges was abused by a customer, who is a really famous figure in my country (don't really want to tell the circumstances but the job is not in a cafe or anything, quite special)
- the colleauge was close to tears and I (as a very young coworker) was watching the scene and also how nobody of the other colleauges really intervened
- I stood up for my colleauge and defused the situation, I managed to sent her away with another colleauge to a separate room, I took the agressor on the side and calmed him down, defused the situation until our manager arrived and heard out both sides
- The colleauge I worked with was so thankful that I stood up for her and my action also had an impact on the perception of other colleauges of how to react in such situations as a whole (bullying was no longer tolerated)
- Overall I felt really proud of myself and the situation was quite intense.
Telling it would make really a good story whereas the other story I have in mind is quite boring but could potentially fit more into the McK frame.
Would you think this is a situation that is suitable? I certainly think I showed leadership skills in that situation.
