Am I supposed to know what these are and how to use them for my interview at McKinsey?

Hi,

Short answer: no, you are not supposed to know and have an in-depth understanding of Prince 2 and Agile frameworks if you apply for a general consulting role. This could be different if you apply for an IT or operational consulting firm/role.

The interview tests focus on testing your skills, amongst others reading, communication, problem solving skills. There is no pre-industrial knowledge is required.

The only industry knowledge they expect is twofold :

  • basic financial principles part of the typical 'standard' framework (e.g., profitability, market entry, M&A from a strategic point of view, pricing, cost reduction ...)
  • common business sense of major sectors/industries (FMCG, pharma, IT, industrial goods...)

Hope this helps to prepare the interview.

Mattijs

Hey there,

No, McKinsey will not expect you to know Prince 2 and Agile frameworks, even if you are applying for operations specific roles.

Something I always tell my coachees from my experience recruiting, interviewing and working at McKinsey is that you are hired for your brain and not your knowledge. Which means emphasis is on how you think about solving problems and not the knowledge you have. (This is different for technical and expert roles of course, where expert topical knowledge is required)

What you will be expected to know is basic (and common) business and financial concepts and industries. And make sure that you ask clarifying questions wherever there's something you dont know or understand

All the best
