Preplounge for PE

Hi coaches,

MBA student here at Wharton. I am currently applying to consulting FT but, given my background, I am also considering to apply in parallel to Private Equity.

I know it is not ideal to apply to two different industries simultaneously but, if for a moment we leave that aside, are you aware if there is a preplounge for PE preparation? Or, alternatively, is there any coach here with PE preparation for big PE firms? (Blackstone, KKR, Bain Cap, etc)

Ex-McKinsey (5yrs) and Wharton MBA (GMAT 750) | Free intro call and dedicated preparation material

Hi! Wharton MBA student here also :)

I don't think you will find on Prep the training material (or coaching) for the technical part (i.e., LBO modeling). There are plenty of courses out there to prepare for that part (WSO, WSP, …).

However, some large funds you mentioned (e.g., Bain Capital) test candidates with business cases similar to those used in consulting. For those specific recruiting processes, you might find helpful material here.

I hope that helps!

I see you've received a few useful answers already, so I don't want to sideline your question, but - and this is a chat I often have with candidates - it might be worth thinking upfront about which of the two industries genuinely interests you.

The reality is that they're quite different and figuring out which one is for you early in the process can save you a lot of time and energy.

Think about it this way - if you invest in prep for both PE and consulting you're likely to be worse off compared to if you only prepared for one.

So practically, have a chat with a few people from each industry to get a sense of how things are going for them, how the job looks like on a daily basis and so on.

Then see if you can do any sort of internship short term in either of them to get a sense of whether you genuinely like the day-to-day work.

That might help you to be more targeted.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

If you are interested, I have successfully coached clients for the fit interview side of PE interviews.

Other than that, the usual suspects would be Wall Street Oasis and Mergers and Inquisitions.

All the best,

Florian

Ex-BCG Principal | 8+ years consulting experience in SEA | BCG top interviewer & top performer

Hi,

I worked in BCG's PE practice. For the PE ops/value creation side - I can help there as I've interviewed for those type of roles before. For investment side - as others mentioned, WSO probably has better materials.

All the best!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, since the PE interview process will be a combination of the IB and consulting interview process, I would advise you to visit IB platforms in addition to PrepLounge.
  • Moreover, as the most experienced coach in terms of consulting, interviewing and coaching experience, I would be more than happy to help you with the consulting part of your upcoming PE interviews. I have helped several coachees land positions at, e.g., Bain Capital, Carlyle and Blackstone.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
